So you're saying it's over 9000?

Yes, but not quite in those terms. The count is now up to 9200 locomotives with photo. And I believe I have enough material in hand to carry that up to 9500 in the next couple of weeks. We shall see.

Thank you! On reviewing our data for this locomotive, it was built as No. 116 and renumbered to 111 in 1928. And it carries the 111 number plate. Database and website changed as you suggested.

Doug, I have a whole pile of photos of the locomotives in Museo Nazionale Ferroviario Di Pietrarsa in Italy. Interested?

Of these locomotives, what percentage are operable? (this can range from full main-line capability to occasional steam-ups on a short stretch of track) I ask this because there must be dozens, if not hundreds that are more or less operable, while Concorde SSTs and Space Shuttles are relics on static display.

Worldwide, approximately 500 are operational +/- 30%

Well, we're up to 9300 locomotives with photographs, and plodding slowly along. I hope to reach the point in 2014 where we have photos of 10,000 different steam locomotives.

Thanks for the followup. I remember how, for many years, we Southern Californians had to settle for the narrow-gauge closed-loop operations at Knott's and Disneyland. Then we started occasional steam runs at Orange Empire. Finally, SP 4449 came down from Oregon in 1975, and in 1991, we had our own big-time steamer when Santa Fe 3751 came back to life.

Thanks! I've also ridden behind 3751 on at least three occasions, but one of the problems with excursions like this is that you can get run-by photos, or photos from inside the train (which is a lot more effective when riding that horse-express car behind the Metrolink engine), but not both.
