Over the years Irm has scraped 7 passenger cars and will probably scrap a wood/steel CNW early 1900's coach in the foreseeable future. Monticello is trying to save them by giving them away.

And the odds are that Illinois Ry. Museum scrapped what had become totally unfeasible to invest any further monies into, whether for moving, welding, Bondo, paint, etc.

In many such cases, offering such cars to a less-than-fully-qualified, not-wealthy-enough party is simply undraping the albatross from around one's own neck and putting it around the neck of someone else--it burdens the receiving party and does nothing for the albatross itself. (Yes, occasionally the receiving party polishes up a gem, but not that often.)

In late 2008 IRM scrapped these two ATSF cars out at the old Thompson Winery location south of Monee, IL rather than move them. These are older views but they were pretty much the same looking, just more hidden by plant overgrowth. To my untrained eye they looked to be in decent enough shape. The RPO's sorting bins were still intact and labeled with places along their route.

IMHO had they had the provenance of IRM's Holy Trinity (C&NW, MILW, CB&Q) they would have been moved, not junked.

HVRM is getting the NKP RPO? Well, good for them, they are putting together quite the collection of NKP equipment. That should pair up nicely with their NKP Bagge Car.

Your allegations of bias are unfounded....read your PMs for my "honest (and informed) opinion"

Unforutnately, Your allegations are somewhat incorrect and incomplete

The two cars were owned by a private party that scrapped them,. IRM had the opportunity to rescue parts from them, and managed to get seats for our own ATSF 2544 out of the deal.
In addition, you somehow fail to mention the fact that these cars were orphaned on a private estate and would have required Thousands of dollars to retrieve.
If someone wants to fund the acquisiton of a piece of equipment, we are happy to thank the donor.

Regarding the question about the CTA carset, it's still here. There has been some interest in it shown by a couple of groups, but nothing has solidified as yet.

Is it open-window, or mechanical A/C? I assume there are not ice hatches on the roof.

It has opening windows, with crank handles similar to automotive style roll-down windows.

The Monticello Railway Museum Board of Directors has recently de-accessioned three pieces of equipment that, due to limited capital, labor, and storage space, stand little opportunity for restoration at MRM. These cars are the following:

Ex NKP #356

Ex NYC 8828, a double door baggage car with two axle trucks and clerestory roof, build date not available in our roster. (Though I'm sure someone on here will know what it is.)

Ex CTA articulated carset #53

All are in poor condition, with the baggage car being the worst off of the three.
All are available to like organizations, free of charge, where they will be preserved. The cost of moving the car/s will be the responsibility of the accepting organization. For further information and additional photos, please PM me.

Thanks for your interest!

Kent -

Happened to run across info on NYC baggage car 8828 on a website today and here is the story:

NYC 8828 was built by Laconia in 1913, apparently for the Boston & Albany as a postal car (B&A number 927). It was converted to a straight baggage car some time before 1944. It became New York Central 828 and later 8828, but no info as to whether the car was renumbered before the conversion was made, at the time of conversion, or later. MRM deaccessioned it about 4 and half years ago. Is the car still at Monticello?
