With some funding now in line for the old Pullman plant, it would seem that this might be a good place to eventually gather, restore and shelter some of the many Pullman-built passenger and freight cars, so many of which need better care. Apparently one or more shop buildings are part of the long term plans. Can anyone knowledgable about the site comment further on its potential as a working historic site for passenger cars? When were the last cars built there? Is there also a Pullman-Standard plant in Indiana that is now a historic site as well?

Of the 300 or so passenger cars for sale today and others that are stored awaiting restoration, ther must be a good example of a car from the wood era,one from the heavyweight are,and one from the lightweight era that could be acquired and restored for display. Pullman Ill. is a unique opportunity to display and interpret what the town and factory were really about. From where I sit this is a "once in a lifetime" deal and one that all people interested in railway preservation should strongly support. Oh,and don't forget that Pullman built busses and freight cars. From looking at the Pullman Web Site it would appear that almost all of the emphasis is on buildings and not product. Perhaps a good start would be to produce a comprehensive list of suviving Pullmans and make recommendations as to which ones could best interpret the railway car building story.
I'm glad that someone has pointed out that Pullman didn't only build passenger cars, although that is what it is best known for doing. The idea of a wooden, a heavyweight, and a lightweight passenger car on exhibit is good, and when a selection of freight cars is added it is better. Don't forget a troop sleeper, as many of these are around, they span the freight/passenger divide, as well as tell a story of Pullman's contribution to wartime efforts.
