Last chance to save a bit of history. Unless funds are raised to move the turntable, it will be cut up for scrap. This is the 100 FT turntable at the former Southern Pacific Hardy Street Shops in Houston, TX. The scrapper will hit it probably next week unless we can commit to saving it. We have a place to store it for free but need to cover the cost of lifting and transportation.

Also if you haven't seen it most of the complex is being reduced to rubble! Some of the buildings will be turned into lofts and shops so some of the history will remain.

Thanks,

Would you have any photos? What type of table is it? Would this be the same type and size as the missing one at the (derelict)Bayshore roundhouse in California? What buildings were left at Houston? I imagine the roundhouse is gone.

Do you intend to attempt to save it?
Are you officially raising funds?
Do you have a use or site for it?
What is the turntable's cash value to the scrapper?

the roundhouse is long gone.several building, including the old boiler shop ,were there but vacant. this is one of only TWO turntables left in Houston. The other is still in use at Milby Street.

The table is a 100 foot table electrically powered, pivoted in the middle and supported on each end. there is a pic of SP 786 on the table in houston.I'll have to see if I can find it.

The scrapper feels it is worth $8500 to him. The owners of the property are willing to let us have it for free but we need to pay to move it. There is no current plan for its' use but it would make a great centerpeice for a museum somewhere. It is a plate girder type probably designed for 350 ton locomotives. The movers and crane company feel they could give us several months to pay for their services.

Hardy Street Shops are located 2 or 3 miles North-East of downtown Houston.

I personally would like to see something from these shops saved. I do not know how many other people feel this way.

here is the photo. It is fairly dark but the turntable is below the whitish bldg (with 2 small dark spots) in the right side middle of the view.
