Not an old photo, but very recent. Sierra RR is hauling many carloads of logs to Standard, CA for processing at the mill there. These logs are from last year's forest fire in Arizona. Good to see them get the business, as Sierra was just about done as a freight hauler.

The Mill used is at Chinese, I was just by there on Sunday. It has a large dry deck with logs stacked about 20' high. Dry is relative as it has sprinkler keeping the logs damp to prevent fire. There were flats with logs on hand at the mill and the adjacent former team track.

The railroad has not gone to Standard in some time and I understand that the old mill there is long gone.

Chinese is near the old gold rush community of Chinese Camp.

Brian:

Sierra has run to Fassler, which is railroad west of Standard. There is a mill (owned by Sierra Pacific), still there as well as a chip/pressboard board plant. From what I've seen in posts elsewhere, they are indeed taking logs up the hill for processing there.

The former Pickering Lumber company town of Standard was sold to developers by Lousiana Pacific some time ago. Sierra has not gone to the depot there with either freight or passenger in 15 years or more.

Check today's Railroad News report for photos of the train to Fassler.
