 Post subject: C&NW Bi-Level Long-Distance Cars

Toward the end of passenger service, the C&NW acquired some bi-level cars for long-distance service that were externally similar in appearance to their commuter cars. As far as I can tell, most of these cars went to AMTRAK at it's start-up. I know AMTRAK no longer has any of these cars, and I was wondering if anyone has any info on the fate of them? The only info I have so far is that a couple of them may possibly exist in Memphis, TN. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I know, some of these cars were in service on the Chicago-Valparaiso, Ind. "dinky" commuter service, a holdover from PRR/PC days. If nothing else, that's where they finished out their days--unless someone's in a mood to correct me (I'm on the road and don't have my reference books handy).........

Some of these cars were sold to Great Lakes Western, which based them out of Mukwonago, Wi.
and operated some excursions on the Wisconsin Central about ten years ago. The remainder were sold to Golden Age Railway in Bellvue Ohio. Two of the GLW cars are the ones at Nashville; I am not positive, but I believe the rest of the GLW cars may have gone to one of the Tom Rader operations for conversion into tour train cars for Canada and/or Alaska.

Tom Rader used four cars from this group for constructing the Florida Fun Train. Upon this operations demise the cars were resold to the Alaska Railroad, where they operate today.
