Well, at least someone is CLAIMING to have taken possession of it:

We are excited to announce our biggest (quite literally!) project to date, EMD DDA40X “Centennial” UP #6925.
UP 6925’s story is a long and colorful one, and thanks to our generous donors will involve seeing the largest diesel locomotive not yet in preservation moved from its long time home in Chamberlain, SD to our collection and restored in an iconic UP paint scheme.
We are looking forward to sharing more of the 6925’s story with you in the near future as this project progresses.

The group's website:

The group purports to own six locomotives and a MoPac caboose, and lists two cats among the "About Us" page on its website.

Is it just me, or does this “group” and their site seem odd at best? Three young people without last names, no location listed, yet they want to help some unnamed community. What are they going to do with a very gutted 6925?

They can't be all bad, if they have two roundhouse cats in their organization. Every roundhouse I've worked in had at least one of them, and this is a fine tradition which should be preserved.

Doesn't Railroad Service Contractors already own the locomotive?

Should we queue up the yearly "there's no young people in the hobby" discussion again?

Looking through the photos on their website a lot of the projects that they show appear to be equipment that carries(ed) BUGX reporting marks with some appearing to have been taken in South Haven, KS or the local area. The one photo of the young man with the horn appears to have been taken on top of the ex-Milwaukee bicentennial unit at ORM in Oklahoma City. Any chance that ORM might be involved in some form or fashion?

Considerable information on the legitimacy of an organization is available on the Internet.

Below are screen shots from the Oklahoma Secretary of State and Guidestar.org for "Midwest Overland Rail Preservation Society Inc"). Their ruling year is the year they received a tax exempt status from the IRS. I'm assuming 501(c)(3). The lack of a mission statement isn't significant, that's provided voluntarily to Guidestar by the organization. Unless they had some significant financial activity in 2023 (before they officially received their tax exempt status) there won't be a tax return due until next year.

More information can be found on the OK SOS site, but there is a $5 charge.

Non profit tax returns and information on tax exempt status at Guidestar (which sometimes takes a while before the IRS to make the files available) is a resource that can be used by both big and small potential donors.

As an aside, our organization's corporate filings are available (for free) on the Alaska Corporations section of the State's web page. Tax filings for several years acquired by them from the IRS and other information that we have voluntarily provided are available at Guidestar.

On Google Maps the second address takes you to a rural property in central Oklahoma, about halfway between Perry and Stillwater. Nothing remarkable about it and definitely no rail access, must be the home of one of the individuals behind this group.
