Don't say you didn't know how....

"Amtrak is always seeking interested companies to participate in Amtrak’s competitive solicitations to purchase available materials and equipment. If you are interested in learning more about material/equipment sales opportunities or being placed on a bidder’s list, please contact Asset Recovery at assetrecovery@amtrak.com."

Something that concerns me, in principle and possibly unnecessarily, is whether Amtrak would require a waiver for critical running parts, specifically involving wheels and axles, that might pose any kind of safety-lawsuit concern if the material is used for operation involving the potentially litigious. I seem to remember a number of accounts saying that Amtrak would not donate equipment to museums if it would be 'operated'...

Ah, but this isn't donation - it's a purchase, and if you've ever seen their terms, it's 'as is where is and we make no claims'. They've been doing this for years on some of the darndest things, including used vehicles that look like death traps on wheels, and that hasn't slowed them up in the least.

What got my attention was specifically the report finding on how much 'stuff' they still had in inventory for the heritage fleet, and the pressure that will now be exerted to get rid of it. And then the 36" wheel blanks then show up by the pallet, I suspect that's the start of everything from toilet handles to 32V light bulbs.

Today's special sale is what looks like a 50', double-door boxcar on friction bearing trucks, NWR 6412, in military green paint, apparently insulated as there's a disclosure of asbestos insulation...and cannot be cut up on site.....'unknown details, sitting for years'...
No dimensional data, no lube plate, nothing on it but a 'technological training center' stencil. "Yours if the price is right"....

You can only imagine what's out there....
