I’ll start this off.

It’s about time that Monongahela #67 gets some love. All I see are pictures of it deteriorating. Sad.

It’s heading to STRT next week…

It looks like it was in Penn Central jade green in 1979, I wonder what the original color was.

Hi Wesley.

Monongahela #67 is coming to the Stewartstown RR and I’m going to restore it to service hauling passengers. I’ll post updates on this thread.

I believe the original color was Red, then later painted Green, then painted Red once more before it was donated in 1988. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

I’m going back to the Green paint scheme like the PA trolley museum panted #73. I’ll have to check with them for a paint code.

Interesting.

Did the Smithsonian Institution (the owner who placed it at Strasburg on long term loan) deaccession it, or has it been re-loaned to Stewartstown?

Via P&LE ownership and control, MGA cabooses were green often confused with NYC Century Green since P&LE was a subsidiary for so long. The original color was DuPont Acrylic 939-97427 which won’t do you much good. It crosses over to EMD 8440408 which may be a little more helpful if someone has that color card.

Alexander.

They deaccessioned it and its disposal will be the Friends of the Stewartstown RR.

Hope I have the legal terms right.

Eric.

I swear I can always count on you to help me. Whether it’s #6 or #67… big thank you!

I’ll need to take a road trip out your way to check out that Plymouth Loco you have.

My opinion…. Century Green and P&LE green had different DuPont color codes but you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference if there actually was any. NYCSHS did an analysis of NYC colors and had the original drift cards and paint samples scanned by Sherwin-Williams in 2010. That color formula should still be good. I’d suggest getting a sample first and seeing if it looks right. I use the 50’ rule for railroad equipment: if it looks good from 50’ away, yer good to go.

Link to the S-W formula: http://nycshs.blogspot.com/p/nyc-colors.html. It’s the “Light Green”. Scroll down the page for the image of the formulas.

Thanks Eric.

They funny part of this paint color discussion is that I’m colorblind.

I’ll always work very hard to make sure it looks right and is historically accurate , however I won’t be able to see the accuracy myself. I’ll even be the one spraying the color top coat!

Guess I’m making sure it’s right for all of You! Feel like that’s the impetus for many of my projects. So other people can enjoy my work.

Oh well. I’ll get the project rolling and will post updates.

I can see how that may be a bit problematic without some outside input ;>)

Ya know, you could paint it pink if you wanted - the important part is that the caboose is preserved. I gotta commend you on taking these projects on.

Everything went very smoothly today.

Other than cosmetics, this thing is still in pretty good shape.

Still has coal in the stove!!!

Will post updates.

Apparently #67 was used in many push/pull moves.

The caboose would have been the leading end of the train for nearly half of its travels.

The Monongahela RR added a whistle and even a brake stand, with gauge, on this caboose because of its frequent task of being the first car at grade crossings!

Sorry for the long build up, but here is that whistle. Had to cut through a few coats of paint and repair some damage.

It’s a two chime. That is, two one chime whistles with a common base. It’s the first one I’ve seen like it. But, I’m also relatively new to Railroading… My previous experience is with single or three chime whistles.

I won’t give this one my normal polish treatment. It will live outside and get a nice oxidation patina.

Sounds nice too!!

Other roads had similar setups. P&WV had air horns on the cupola roofs for signaling the locos. I’m not sure about the brake valve - I’d need to go back and look at some plans and images. EJ&E had a small automatic brake valve in the cupola as well as your usual emergency dump valves. Not sure about an air whistle or horn, though. You’d see these setups if there were a lot of backup moves, especially if the moves were over grade crossings.

With MGA, there’d be a lot of backup moves setting out or picking up cars at the mines.

Thanks Eric.

This is a mystery I’ll surely need your help to solve.

I’ll check for a part number on the brake valve. It has multiple positions and looks like an automatic valve in a locomotive.

Need to do more research. Always more to learn.

Here’s the brake valve setup.

I’ll remove the valve and gauge this weekend. Will get the deadweight tester out and calibrate the gauge. Will also take the valve apart to service it.

Maybe learn more about the brake valve too!

The stove needs a tuneup. The castings are in great shape but needs some fastener repairs and a new stove pipe. I also have to clean it out. It and the coal bunker have Bituminous in them. That stuff irritates my lungs so bad I can barely breath. Will switch it over to Anthracite and will be good to go. That’s what I heat my house with.

Also found this thing in one of the compartments. Can’t tell if it’s a cot or a stretcher. Still has Monongahela 67 painted on the frame. Looks like it’s never been used. Inside the bag is what looks like a heavy wool blanket.
