Just saw the Dean Forest Railway in the UK is suspending steam due to dry conditions. According to their Facebook post "Due to the prolonged dry weather, we have had to take the decision to run our heritage diesel railcar instead of the steam service as the fire risk is too high. Continuing to operate steam would endanger our crew, neighbours and the surrounding ancient forest, and potentially add undue stress to the local emergency services."
This is the first time I've seen outside the US suspend steam due to fire danger. And overall this early too. I'm not as in the loop to steam operations overseas so this may well be nothing of note but interesting nonetheless.

Legal precedence is a scary thing, and the lessons learned from the Durango & Silverton (for a fire I'm still not convinced in any way that thy actually started) haven't been lost on anyone.
When in doubt, do the thing less likely to cause a lawsuit. THAT is the world we're in today, folks.

We've had no steam summers for as long as I can remember in Australia.

Edit: We have days that are declared "Total Fire Ban" which mean no fires of any sort outside, even gas bbq's. Steam has to be replaced by diesel on those days for an advertised excursion. Most museums just don't run steam over the summer months to avoid starting a bushfire and to get major maintenance done on steam locos.

Drought is a new normal here in Europe.

When I first visited Europe in the 1980's, northern Europe meant rain jackets, cold wind and rain in the summer. I nearly caught a cold in Blackpool in July. Not anymore. Shorts and t-shirts in Copenhagen all summer long.
