UP #4014 was pushing #5511 around today I assume to test her bearings for the trip to her new home. YouTube. The first time Young valve gear has exercised in many years.

Pretty cool, I don't know that I've ever seen Young valve gear in motion but if you're gonna give it a whirl, why not use the Worlds Largest Switcher to boost it 'round?

Cheers, Dave

That and making dang sure the bearings on the axles are well lubed. You can bet house money that UP has packed the bearings on 5511 and 3985 as full as possible with lube to make this trip as easy as possible.

5511 is the only complete locomotive extant with Young Valve Gear. There is the frame, cylinders, and complete running gear, including Young Valve Gear, to a former Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis 0-6-0 that's at NMOT in St. Louis. It usually resides on a flat car in the tunnel, out of public view.

So I guess I can pull my nerd card here... 5511 is one of two complete locomotives with Young Valve Gear, the other one being in Quebec.

Quebec, North Shore and Labrador 702. Originally built for the Temiskaming & Northern Ontario, and later Ontario Northland. The other surviving member of the class, 701 has Baker valve gear as fitted at some point during a rebuild. I'm not a expert on the Ontario Northland, so can't say much else other than what's seen on the two existing examples of that railroad's pacifics...

Sorry to dig up an older thread, but the equipment train has set off from Cheyenne. Due to arrive in Silvis in approximately a week.

Interestingly is the inclusion of former C&NW F7 401 at the end. 401 wasn’t included in any of the donation lists for equipment, wonder where it might end up.

I saw a comment on Facebook that said it's headed for the Boone & Scenic Valley. Doesn't UP have one or two other F units sitting in Cheyenne?

We gave up the chase sometime around noon. The Donation Special was stopped on the mainline about a mile and a half west of their first service stop at Burns, Wyo, with an eastbound freight halted about five carlengths behind them. Anybody know how far they got today ??

5$ bet that U.P is going to tear down the remaining stalls of the Cheyenne round house once things quiet down. Seem's to me like the reason they donated all the equipment. With them tearing down Tower 55 as we speak is some money grubbing exec is wanting to lower tax value and the one hurdle he had was to dispose of all that clutter in that pesky round taxable structure harming his profit margin... Just my .02 and speculation....
