Post subject: My Steamtown Nominee: CPR 1098
PostPosted: Mon Dec 30, 2002 11:33 pm

I'd love to George Hart's 1913 CPR class D10h 4-6-0 No. 1098 stop by for a visit someday. She is stored serviceable at Jim Thorpe, Pa., last steamed in 11/1998, but first needs to be brought into compliance with the revised CFR 49 Part 230 regs. No. 1098 is also formerly part of the Steamtown collection (acquired by F. Nelson Blount in 1961), sold to Hart in 1987 by the Steamtown Foundation before the much ballyhooed fall '87 auction. I remember back in '96 when we put CPR 972's chime whistle on 1098 and blew it for the first time under full pressure--it echoed for miles, what a melodious sound! I certainly hope No. 1098 sees steam coursing through her veins again someday.

Kurt,

I readily admit a passion for the CPR D-10's. In fact, from the D-4's on up. They are the perfect size for a tourist railroad, and they look pretty classy, too.

I saw #1098 run on one of the few days she actually moved at Jim Thorpe. Someday, somewhere she is going to make an excellent ambassador of steam.

Ya' know, she had entire subclass of sisters assigned to Vermont... maybe... maybe... someday she'll live in New England (again).

Kurt and Rob,,

I guess I'm one of the few who actually got to fire both of George's D-class engines. The 972 was a real treat, especially with 9 cars and a dead RS3 on the hind end. Grouchy engineer. No stops to blow for steam either. Man, could she throw the cinders from that "quality" Pennsylvania dirt someone claimed was coal. The 1098 was more of a de-bugging exercise. I'll never forget the stop up around Lake Hauto on Columbus day, with the left side lubricator line carboned up. There we are, sitting in the fall sun with a cool breeze blowing, trying to clean out the check and lines and get the train rolling again. A crowd had formed wondering just what was going on. All the sudden, the oil is flowing again and away we go. Nice bark pulling out and climbing up to the Hometown trestle, trying to make up some of the lost time and nobody complaining a bit.

Someday, someday....

Who said steam died years ago? I say todays tourist railroaders are just as good, if not better, than the old-timers, that our experiences are just as "valid" and meaningful as the old days.

Well, it might not be in the US, but at least there is one operating D10 in North America. Pic is from the weekend before Chirstmas. Enjoy!
