Post subject: Davenport / CAT ?
PostPosted: Sat Dec 21, 2002 7:32 pm

Roundhouse Railroad Museum has become the proud (?) owner of a 1937 4 wheeled siderod equipped Davenport diesel mechanical locomotive tentatively called DUCK since it is smaller than GOAT and waddles on its siderods.

It was highly depreciated in service, ended up in the Jacksonville NRHS outdoor collection, suffered a cracked block or two in the Caterpillar D8800 - 82 HP diesel prime mover and the 2 cylinder gasoline starting engine.

I pulled the injectors today and found specks of rust floating in water in the cylinders - not what I was hoping to find.

Caterpillar doesn't have a clue as to what this motor is and hasn't made any in living corporate memory. They don't know if anything in the available product line would replace it.

Rebuilding the engine is possible, but no parts are available, or if any are, again, Cat isn't aware of what they might be.

Anybody out there have good technical information on this type of locomotive or prime mover? Anybody out there with a Davenport re-engined lately?

All advice from others familiar with this sort of thing welcome please. We have a local heavy equipment manufacturer interested in helping us out but we need a plan.

>There use to be a Davenport 4 wheeled siderod diesel park(out of service) at a grain elevator in Columbus, Ohio. I photographed it a couple of years ago, but haven't checked on it in a while. It looks like the engine picture at the bottom of page 363 in The Second Diesel Spotter's Guide. It may have the same engine.

Dave,

Contact the Walkersville and Southern RR in Maryland. ( http://www.wsrr.org/) They have a Davenport that sounds like the one yall have acquired. The one we have is Cummins Powered and served in WW 2 with the US Army. Contact Ronnie Baird with the WSRR. He should be able to help you.

I wish you luck and am glad to here of another Davenport being rescued.

Our Davenport seems a little smaller than either yours or WS but most interested in the information. Is your Cummins original or a second engine?

Dave,

If you want to find info on parts for the original engine, you should get some help over at the Historical Construction Equipment Association. They have several bulletin boards and there are links to shops that specialize in old Cat restorations and parts. I'll bet you can find parts for that engine if you really want to restore it.

Good luck,
Hugh

Hi Dave,

The Cummins is a replacement. It originally had a LeRoi 6 cylinder gas engine in it. The Cummins is a Turbo Diesel. The one at Roots is a sister to this one and it is complete and original with its LeRoi. You may try the egroup, Critterslist. They may be able to help. They have helped us some in our quest.

Happy Holidays!!

A pair of service manuals for Diesel/generator sets using D8800 and D1300 Cat engines is currently for sale on eBay, starting bid $10, no bids yet. The D8800 manual has a 1953 date.

Hi Dave
The old Sumpter Valley #101, which the Colorado Railroad Museum has been restoring, is a Davenport 4 wheel, side rod, Cat powered beast built in 1937. They may be of some help.
Good Luck, Tom

I should have remembered that best Tom - thanks for the reminder. Will call and rattle Andrew's cage after the holidays.
