I have post revised files at the links noted in the prior post with a few additional and corrected notes and two additional views. Links and file names remain the same.

Color rendition of 1551 as of 2019 but with the 1919 Union Iron Works Boiler and Shay Stack mounted by D&GVRR.

The 2.5" Safety Valves & Whistle are generic designs to illustrate location.

The Cinder Dump (on the bottom of the Smoke Box) and the Poke Hole Covers are typical to Climax but will probably not be added by D&GVRR. Ash Pan is approximate pending further measurements. Whether Builders Plates will be installed is unknown. I am aware of the location of one of the originals but I do not know if it will become available and it does take two.

The restoration of 1551 may be delayed due to frost cracks in the Steam Chests.

Not that I doubt it has occurred, but can you share details of the story?
Info is mighty, mighty scarce on this Climax anymore

Due to my access to 1551 which is per the agreement of the Cass Shop Foreman (I am a member of the MSR&LHA and worked on 1551 for 6 years until December 2015), I am reluctant to share other than basic info as that must be the D&GVRR's prerogative. Wish I could.

WES your drawings are simply outstanding, thanks for sharing them. Too bad about the issue with the cracks in the steam chests. That should a simple enough fix.

Wes, since you are a member of MSR&LHA, don't they have an archive? Also, the West Virginia Department of Culture and History has an archive. I would imagine both organizations are equipped to handle digital donations.

I have posted recent 3D pdf drawings of Climax CN 1551 which may be downloaded from Amazon AWS. I have broken the major assemblies down into smaller assemblies as the complete locomotive is a VERY large 3D pdf file. Best viewed in Shaded Outline in CADD Optimised Light.

One may hide parts to see what is otherwise concealed by overlying parts. The complete locomotive now contains about 10,500 parts.

1551 Engine Frame: https://s3.amazonaws.com/SIMONTON/1551+ ... iginal.pdf

1551 Engine without trucks: https://s3.amazonaws.com/SIMONTON/1551+Engine.pdf

1551 Cistern with Frame:

Cistern Truck with Line Shaft

Complete Locomotive: https://s3.amazonaws.com/SIMONTON/1551.pdf

Note that the 3D pdf of the locomotive is very large and will tax a slow or average computer.

Requires Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader as browser pdf viewer and previewers will not display the 3D aspects of the drawings.

Amazon AWS keeps changing the interface to make the drawings"Public". I think I have succeeded in making them "public" but if anyone has problems let me know.

If you have any questions on the drawings, please feel free.

Wes,
I get "Access Denied" when I try to access your links.

I think I have finally made the drawings "Public". As due to presets and that fact that a cookie may still be on my computer, I cannot be certain but they now work for me.

I'm going purely by what I've read, not what I've seen here, but my understanding is that the original Climax patent going back to Charles Scott involved the special design of the helical gears between the axles and the main driveshaft, and that the original foundry master was actually handcarved out of wood and 'tweaked' until it worked. It's reputedly 'the part' in a Climax design that made it work, and was carried forward to even the latest designs. Everybody else's gear systems were relatively straightforward, his spur/helical were somewhat of a bumblebee that actually worked.

Were you able to document and draw that?

John Lewis provided me with copies of the original Climax drawings of the F509 Ring Gear, F217 Pinion Gear and F221 Countershaft/Crankshaft gear from which I developed the 3D CADD drawings with the help of an engineer in Denmark named Bent Gobel.

The drawings were quite detailed. I created the following cross sections from those drawings mirroring the half side show to reflect both sides, and using the newly cast and old ring and pinion gears at Cass to confirm the result.

The top section is per the original Climax drawing with the filleted gear tooth and the bottom is the Cass gear with a chamfered gear tooth as done by the pattern maker Wayne James. I have permission to share the info provided by John Lewis but not the drawings themselves.

Note the difference in the Called Pitch Offset in the Center of the Skew Circle in the two drawings. The original Climax drawing states 2 19/64" (Top Drawing), however, using a CADD program and the stated Offsets from the Center of the Line Shaft and Center of the Gear, my CADD program reports the Offset to be 2 15/64" (Bottom Drawing). A small difference but 4/64" = 2/32" = 1/16". Which is correct (if either) I do not know.

Note: The Circle is identified as the "Skew Circle" on the original drawing.

Attached is a 3D pdf of the final result.

OK, not sure where the applause button is, but I'd hit it.

That's really nice work. That's the secret sauce and the Original Recipe, all in one.
