I have tried to update my exisiting anthracite lokie list for the Anthracite Industry Modelers Group on Yahoo at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/aimod

This is as updated as possible, but no where near complete.

Unfortunately, I HAD more information, but I cannot find the files!!!!!! My apolgies to any RYPN'ers who sent data I have lost.

Yes. My son and I bought it from the owner of the roundhouse. It is my understanding that the roundhouse is now gone. Is this correct?
We have made good progress on the restoration of #126. New sheets (patches) in firebox, 100+ staybolts, 50+ new rivets, wheels turned, it is now stripped down to the frame, break rigging springs bearings etc. have all been cleaned and painted. It is as far apart as it can be. From now on it is a case of putting it back together.

The two Allied Chemical engines were built for The Solvay Process Co. which later became Allied Chemical through merger. They spent their Solvay Process/Allied careers working the Jamesville quarry which supplied the huge soda ash plant in Solvay, NY with limestone. Our engine, #53 was built by ALCO in 1922 and was lettered T.S.P.Co. on the tank until retirement in about 1955 when Rail City purchased the entire Jamesville fleet including #53 and #63 (about a dozen engines

A few years ago I saw two Solvay engines, refugees from Rail City, rusting away behind an antique store at the bottom edge of central PA though the name of the town eludes me. They were ostensibly for sale for about $10,000 at the time for which the antique store guy would remove the saddle tanks to make them "look antique".

John,

Excellent project. Allow me to express gratitude for both of your restorations.

The Carbondale roundhouse was a pile of ramshackle bricks when I was last there two years ago. It wasn't really demolished, but it sure wasn't standing.

In the last 10 years, Carbondale also lost it's 1828 era D&H canal shop buildings. A crime!!!

However, for the railroad preservationist, the Carbondale area holds many relics.

Among them are:

Breaker powehouse by Carbondale yard has at least 15 steel boxcars ranging from small AAR/X-29 cars up to larger Burlington Route cars. A variety of roads are evicent in this incredible abanonded collection of 40' footers.

One of the cars is stuffed with seats believed to beout of the Laurel Line interurbans, although I suspect they are out of the White busses formerly stored on the property.

Just south at Child's, PA, the former postoffice (now a home) is a wooden NYO&W milk car.

At the famous Baumann's scrap yard are numerous steel reefers, 4 steel O&W head end cars, the charred remains of 2 wooden O&W coaches and at least two huge piles of mine railroad equipment.

The hills around the upper Lackawanna Valley probably hold other secrets. A handful of cars, like Steamtown's DL&W hoppers, came from up there.

There are more goodies to get and to find, for sure!

Rob Davis

PS: To spice it up, many of my local friends used to call Carbondale Cahr-bonn-dee-lay!!!

Thank you for the info!

Does anyone know of a full roster of the Allied/Solvay fleet that would hsow which lokies were anthracite vets and which ones were built for Allied/TSP.

Thanks!

Post subject: How about Carbon Limestone?
PostPosted: Mon Jul 08, 2002 7:58 am

Two former Carbon Limestone tank engines - Bernie Watts' 0-6-0 and New Hope Valley's 0-4-0 - have been saved and are under restoration.

BTW, NHVRR had a very successful second test steaming / debugging session this weekend which resulted in every appliance and system working apart from the hydrostatic lubricator, and the yet unfinished wiring. The new old stock 1945 rubber seals in the lubricator glasses seem to have lost some elasticity......

Actually, before Carbon Limestone, 17 was built for New York Shipbuilding Co. New Hope Valley RR has a Baldwin Diesel centercab which was also built for NYSB originally, at about the same time as 17. Who in 1945 would have imagined that the most complete collection of steam and diesel power from NYSB would wind up on a small branchline tourist railroad in NC? Interesting universe.

What else is left from Carbon Limestone? NYSB? Should we hold a reunion event at Bonsal?

Hey Rob

Don't forget the relativly complete (though deteriorated to the point of being unsalvageable) wooden passenger car still on its trucks behind the junk store in Childs. The ex NYO&W passenger car is reputedly an original New York and Oswego Midland piece, how rare is that?

Rob,

Good to see you starting this up again since "Ahead of the Torch". I have some more info to contribute; then I have two inqueries of my own.

First, regarding the locomotive "buried in a culm pile" at Wanamie. I have been fortunate to have received a couple of pictures of it; exact date taken is not known. It is surrounded by a culm pile, but it is/was NOT buried. Only a portion of the cab is buried.

After studying the Wanamie video several time, I have concluded it is #8; based on a unique shaped dent in back corner of the cab roof. In J. David's directory, I believe it is the Glen Alden Coal engine he listed at an unknown location. It is a VIW 3ft guage locomotive, no other builder details known. One of the above mentioned pictures was published in an update to "Surviving World Steam Locomotives".

In the pictures, it is badly derelict. The Wanamie mine was a Superfund site; which I understand was cleaned up starting during the 1990s. I fear it was scrapped; if anyone can confirm or deny this, it would be appreciated

Now, some new entries. Some of these may in fact not be what you looking for; I am not certain which ones qualify. As always, corrections/additions are welcomed.

***

South Carver, MA - There is a "Still. Coal" #2, VIW 42" guage on display. Is this the same as LNC #3, which you asked about?

Bayville, NJ - Glen Alden Coal #28, VIW 1918, 3ft gauge on display at restraurant. I have four Glen Alden Coal lokies listed; this is the last of the four.

Newfoundland(?), NJ - "Phil&ReadingCoal&Iron" #91, H.K. Porter, 4ft gauge.

Riverhead, NY - Defiance Coal #11 "Roy Dunwell", H.K. Porter 6687/1921, 3ft gauge; at Railroad Museum of Long Island; nice looking.

Navarre, OH - ButlerConsolidatedCoal number unknown, H.K. Porter 5452/1914, 42" guage, stored at the Thomas Diehl estate

Elysburg, PA - not a new one, but the one you have listed is LVC #99. Built by the LVC shops in 1924.

Phoenixville, PA - Lehigh Navigational Coal #39, VIW 4327/1941, 42" gauge; stored at Bob Ottinger, Spring City Rd.

Phoenixville, PA - Lehigh Navigational Coal #60, VIW 7795/1945, 42" gauge; stored at Bob Ottinger, Spring City Rd.

Beckley, WV - WindingGulfCoalCo #1, VIW 1596/1910, 3ft guage; at Beckley Excabition Mines.

***

Now for my two inquires. I recieved an e-mail informing me that there are/were three ex-PRR steam locomotives sunk in Dires Quarry, Rte 724 & Red Shed Rd., Monocacy Station, PA. Since that e-mail, I have seen somewhere that one of the three, a Bas class 0-4-0, is now on display at said location (probably steamlocomotive.com). I could find no mention of the other two 0-4-0Ts supposively sunk as well anywhere; does anyone have any more info?

Finally, do any of the Antracite museums, existing breakers (such as Huber) or powerhouses have any steam lizards? If so, data and photographs would be appreciated. I am slowly building a database of them on my Steam Lizards group on Yahoo as well. Several of the mining museums out west have one on display; it would seem like there would be some out east as well.

Thanks for the plug earlier Dave. As always yours and others support is appreciated.

Ex-Philadelphia & Reading Coal Company 48" gauge 0-4-0T 91 was a static display at the old Morris County Central (tourist) Railroad, first at Whippany, NJ and later at Newfoundland, NJ. I don't know what became of this lokie, but it's not at the former MCC location. Anyone know what happened to this lokie?

These four ex-Lehigh Navigation Coal Sales 42" gauge lokies--3 0-6-0T's and 1 0-4-0T (some missing their saddletanks)--were the property of Malcohm Ottinger (onetime owner of GM&N 4-6-2 425). They were at his machine shop located above Phoenixville. steamlocomotive.com lists the 0-4-0T 60 as now being at Middletown, NY (see below link for photo). I believe Mr. Ottingers's son still has the machine shop, but I don't know if the 0-6-0T's are still there. Anyone know?

The antique dealer you refer to is located on Rt. 30 a few miles west of Bedford. As of a year ago both engines were still there. There had been a third which was cleaned up and, minus saddle tank, sold to someone down south for display. He also had a very nice looking steam traction engine and the remains of a small carnival park train.

So THAT'S what those lokies are. This guy I know
showed me some pictures of lokies in that area that he ran across in his travels. Still there as of last year!

I thought I would post this here since it comes up in a google search. Here are some photos of Hudson Coal 61, which is currently at the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour. The BW photos were listed as 1962 and it looks like it was on display at the D&H building in Honesdale, PA. I'm hoping at some point 61 can be restored and become part of the Gravity Slope site in Archbald, PA.

Is there any current info on the two 0-4-0's from Wanamie (Glen Alden) that are in OR?
