 Post subject: UP steam question

While working on the Vanderbuilt tender of the #197, a 1905 Pacific type, I noticed the one side of the runningboards is still trimmed in a 2" wide brass banding. In a circa 1920s' picture in our archives, the locomotive looks like it has a brass smokebox mounted spot (number) plate. The ring of the spotplate has obviously been polished. The drawings we have come across for the spotplate call for it to be made out of iron, obviously not a "polishable" metal for outdoor use.

I'm looking for info on:

When did the UP use brass banding on thier locomotives post 1900?

Did the UP use brass cast spotplates for post 1900 locomotives?

If/when the UP used the brass trim and spotplates, what material was used for the cast numbers on the spotplate and sand dome locations?

What colored paint was used for locomotive lettering durring this era?

Thanks for any info!!

Can't answer your question, but found this photo, if you haven't seen it already.

Bob, I've tried over the last few days, and can't get either page to come up.

To clarify what Smokebox is describing, please refer to the photographs at the following link.

The DPL site is sometimes troublesome, but worth the effort, as the whole Otto Perry photo collection and many others are on-line. If you have trouble, go to Yahoo and type in Denver Public Library, then find the Western History Collection, then search by keyword, in this case "Union Pacific 3203". That should get you there. There are dozens of other UP 4-6-2 photos also, beginning from about 1912.
