If we coordinate on the timing of your login, I'll sneeze at the appropriate moment in the proper direction. It may take a few tries to get the exact northwesterly coordinates nailed down, though. But once that happens, you should be good to go.

I couldn't agree with Bob more. I've just added Xenforo to www.steamlocomotive.info and it is reachable either by the website, or directly at http://forums.steamlocomotive.info

There's not a great deal of content there yet, but it will grow as we intend to use it as an information sharing locus going forward.

I should also mention that the login problems at RyPN seem to be confined to Chrome. I've had no trouble logging in with Firefox, Edge or Opera.

I've had occasional hiccups with both Chrome-based Brave and with Firefox.

I don't think the issues are very much browser dependent since the problems are server-side. Browsers, by necessity, are very forgiving with deprecated or bad code - to a point. I get the same results with Safari, Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Opera. Sometimes I get right in (like right now and I'm using Firefox), sometimes it takes 4 to 6 whacks at it, sometimes I can't log in at all no matter how pretty I smile at the screen.

PHP, the server-side code this forum is based on, has moved on quite a way version-wise over the years and this forum software has lagged way behind. Hence the removal of some features here that stopped working.

Browser compatibility problems with Chrome are well documented. There are definitely sites that I use that won't work with Chrome at all.

In an ultimate bit of irony, it took me 5 tries to log in with Chrome, then I cam back to this post, and tried to reply, to which the forum responded "you have to log in" After 3 more tries of that, I said "Let's try Edge!" Worked fine, logged in first try, stayed logged in, and assuming this actually posts, I had no issues.

There is apparently some sort of DOS attack going on right now, the post views have gone from the normal several hundred into the 3000 to 4000 range. So, it is taking an inordinately long time to view a post or to log in.

Let's not forget the related issue: logging off. That also takes multiple tries.

I wrote an update on restoration, added 10 photos, only to find I'd been logged out. Logged in again, re-posted, and bam! Same thing.
I am logged in then inexplicably, logged out.

Normally, when that happens you can back arrow to the screen before you submitted the post, highlight and copy the text, and then log in, paste the text, and quickly submit. Then edit and add the photos one at a time.

FYI my browser I use normally deletes cookies and history on closing, so I could just close the browser and open a fresh one.

Do you need his cooperation for technical reasons? He'd be hard-pressed to claim ownership of the intellectual property written and posted by others. Even if he could, what would his damages be? He couldn't claim any loss/dilution and as long as you are not profiting, no unjust gain on your part. Name the new site something else and be done with it. The lack of reliability of this site is one of the factors that are contributing to its decline. The number of daily posts is way down. Most recent posts are mainly about the latest PA rail preservation circus. Off load any valuable cargo and let this ship sink.
