Back when ACL 1031 (now at Spencer, NC) was still on display in Florence, this little 0-4-0 was displayed in front of a fried chicken restaurant next to US 52 near the I95 overpass. The boiler is actually a Kewanee stationary heating boiler sitting on the original locomotive frames. I believe the stack (apart from the spark arrestor addition) and the cab are also original to the locomotive. The tender is just an open-front steel box.

Thank you for the additional information. Are the stack and domes just decorative - added to the Kewanee boiler?

I don’t recall. I’m in Florence at least once or twice a month; I’ll try to go over and check it out on my next visit. It’s been a LONG time since I last saw it. I may even have a photo somewhere.

The original boiler must have been terribly rotted with rust if it wasn't even suitable for display.

Or was repurposed as a stationary boiler to replace a worn out Kewanee.

"A Southern Railway brake sled made from a steam locomotive tender cut down and filled with concrete sits abandoned at the old Finley Yard in Birmingham." Saw this photo on facebook and thought of N&W 917, it looks like it is roughly the same size as its original tender, and could be plausible once the concrete is chipped off and sheet metal applied, certainly better than that ridiculous thing they put a lot of work into mocking up.
