What are the chances anyone out there would have the Plymouth locomotive list and could look up any 3' gauge Plymouths for Hutton Brick Works in Kingston, New York?

By the sounds of it, the list is no longer available. I'd be interested in buying a copy.

This is great, many thanks. At first glance, it would appear that we have the 5065, but then the Connecticut Antique Machinery Assoc is shown as having the 5065. Photos and such would seem to confirm that they indeed have the 5065.

We did find a Hutton pattern in our Plymouth and it came from the same area. Would Hutton have bought it used? Does your list have any other Hutton Plymouths in it?

Based on the side windows and such, would appear ours was a gas engine originally.

Those three are the only Plymouths shown as being owned by Hutton. They could have bought the one you have used. Several other Plymouths were built for brick works at Kingston.

I imagine Hutton was the only brick plant large enough in Kingston to have a railroad of any size. The majority were pretty small.

John T, is there a chance I can get a copy of the list from you? Or borrow it? I'd sure like to figure out the history of this locomotive.

JR - if you have a serial number (4 digits), contact Plymouth Locomotive Services. They’re on the web. They may be able to look up some info for you. For cast frames, look around the upper right hand side of the rear back bumper. It would be stamped there. I don’t recall where the number is stamped on built up frames.

From the book The Great Hudson River Brick Industry by George V. Hutton (Purple Mountain Press Fleischmanns, NY 2003) Hutton Co. invented/built an automated brick making machine in 1928 that was not retired until 1980. In the 1930's Hutton bricks were used to build the Cloisters Museum and the Hayden Planetarium (p-158). The Hutton Co. was bought out by the Jova Manufacturing Co which was owned by a Cuban Sugar Plantation family. In the book there is a photo of the Hutton Works in the 1950's and a photo later in the book a photo from the1970's of the former Hutton Works, so Jova took over somewhere in that time span.

Last, but certainly not least, is a McBride shot of the c/n 5056 at Kent, Ct from 2007.

Many thanks for the help. A key question would be whether Hutton bought used engines from other brick yards in Kingston. The reason I ask is covered below.

The 5065 being in Kent, Ct complicated things a bit for us. We thought we were on to something, but alas the records do not confirm our Plymouth as being at Hutton and do not confirm a number. Via some record searching with an eye on Kingston, Model DL, and the diesel upgrade, Plymouth #2173 has some potential. We will see if we can find some numbers on the motor and the frame tomorrow. A motor number may help us figure out when it was installed which would help confirm if the #2173 is the correct Plymouth number. See what happens. We did find the Hutton brick stamp in the muck in the bottom of the cab and it was with the Vulcan for a lot of years in NY state.

Some further information on #2173 via William McBride.

This is the 2173. As far as Hutton is concerned I have the one Plymouth and three Vulcans. As you can see this Plym was sold from B.W. Sangor to Terry Bros. in 1933.
