I have an axel from a scrapped Fairmont tamper. There is a adjustable collar on the inside of each bearing, it looks like to limit the end play on the axel. Now the collar has a semi circular groove in the corner like it would run against the side of the bearing race on loose balls but none are present. The casting number on the bearing housing is 52073K. Have any of you serviced anything like this.
Thanks in advance to anyone that can confirm that there are loose bearing balls that are missing.

Not sure if I am understanding your question correctly, but are you aware of the carboard cone that goes over the axle? The used cardboard to electrically isolate the wheels so the speeders/carts wouldn't trip the block signals. Without the cardboard cone, the wheel won't fit tightly on the axle. I'm sure there are other people more knowledgeable about this than I am and not sure if that is what you are asking about.

I'm aware of the fiber or paper cones on the wheels, this is the side of the bearing away from the wheel and the collar is on the side farthest from the wheel. Fyi, I am narrowing the gauge of the axel which is why i'm disassembling it.
