Illinois has a month-old web site that allow for a search of historic structures from various survey sources. I haven't looked for water tanks, although there is at least one ex-Wabash wooden tank downstate that has been restored. I find the site diffiicult for universal searches, since it seems to be designed for local query. Do other states have such sites?

I believe there's one still at Borie, Wyoming [fogive me if my place-names are inaccurate, but it's where the Denver line diverges from the southernmost transcon main, south of Cheyenne].

There may still be one at Harriman, Wyoming as well.

There is an ancient Colorado Central tank rusting away on the grounds of the Georgetown Loop RR.

Hi Earl,

There was also one at Winter Quarters, Utah, at least in the mid seventies. I have an idea it was still in service as the town water supply. Anyone have any news as to its fate?

White Mountain Central Rairoad at Clark's Trading Post in Lincoln, NH uses thiers every day during the operating season. I don't recall its history, but I'm sure its authentic. A number of years ago they had the gauge board off of it and in the shop for a paint job and you could see the letters were slightly raised from the rest of it owing to the paint's protection over the years.

I believe it is original. Cass Scenic RR recently received a grant from West Virgina DOT to rebuild it (and a separate grant to rebuild their Climax).

North of town, behind the Lumber Company, but fading fast- not sure if it survived the past few winters.

Although I can't vouch for the completeness of this database, it does include all of North America. Unfortunately the listings are by county within each state and don't appear to be searchable. Regardless, a good resource for searching for a wide variety of railroad structures.

Another C&O tank is still standing a few miles down the old Greenbrier branch from Cass at Marlinton, WV. Unfortunately the track is gone.

Two left on McCloud Railway...one at the McCloud station (still has water in it, but is leaking badly and not currently used in the steam program) and one at Bartle (18 miles east of McCloud). The Bartle tank has been dry for about 8-9 years now and needs extensive work (if not some sort of an insert) if it ever is to be used again. A third tank stood at Hooper (4 miles west of McCloud) until a year or two ago when the tank part was finally taken down (it was leaning over towards the tracks and was threatening to collapse on a train at some point). The platform still stands.

Is the wooden tank west of Scranton still standing along the DL&W mainline? It has been a long time since I have seen it (10 years or more).

Me thinks it was in Waverly. I know it was out that way near a concrete overpass. You really couldn't see it fromthe tracks as it was set back and the DL&W was once multi-track through there. It was literally in a guys back yard. I always went to see it from the road side.

Fred: Do you happen to know where the Wabash wooden tank is located in downstate Illinois? I asked a couple of my Wabash friends and they didn't seem to know about it. I get down that way on occassion and would like to make a detour if not too far out of the way, and photograph it.

Rob, This tower ( a Santa Fe type, described in this thread, like the East Stroudsburg) is in Factoryville, just past the station, which is now just a siding. I never saw it on the Steamtown excursions when we ran to Kingsley, though I knew it existed. It is in someone's yard, which probably explains why it's still there.
