On July 21, 2016, the CMRR removed its equipment from Shokan by rail. The equipment consisted of the CMRR crane and tender, and a privately held caboose. CMRR 42 and work flat 201 were sent up from Kingston for the move, and reached Shokan on July 20, 2016. The photos below by William Sternitzke chronicle the move in great detail.

Guys, talk to Ulster County about this. They can't just flagrantly pave over like this without working the crossing properly.

It would have been very easy if they consulted the CMRR what to do, the highway company obviously has plenty of equipment to do things. They could have easily ramped down the asphalt to meet with the current crossing. Now they have to tear out the laid asphalt and rework it.

I've had some tempting thoughts about this, go grab a fire truck and block the highway in protest....that'll get their attention...see how it feels, huh huh?

or put a snow plow on an engine and just plow thru the asphalt...

neither reccomended but its tete-e-tete to whats happenned.

Someone in the county wasnt thinking, or there's this politician lurking in the offices anti-railroad. (based on various reports I have heard)

I may have told this story before, it bears repeating here. Long ago around Chicago one of the interurban lines wanted to cross a railroad, the C&NW I believe but I wll just use the line for representation, this really happenned.

The interurban line was trying to get a crossing over the C&NW, after some haggling or courts, obviously the C&NW did not want the crossing, competition you know, but finally agreed to the crossing, but they blocked the crossing area with freight cars so no work couold be done. This went on for a while blocking the crossing area with cars, so the interurban company went to court again and finally the railroad relented and the crossing got built.

There has been plenty of times where railroads crossed and it took court cases to sort out who would be responsible for what.

I don't know if CMRR or the county wants anymore lawsuit cases and lawyers and so on and so on the 2 need to have some amicable and responsible cooperating for things to get done right.
I tend to think something was up going on with the former Kingston Mayor and I tend to think its all related with the reservoir and the trail thing. And the recent Railfan-Railroad mag commented the rail line was slated to turn into a trail. If they have the money to do that then they can reroute the railroad to a safer spot.

And if they have the money to do this asphalt job they have the money to do it right.

Its poor excuses saying "its too much money for the crossing" they are making excuses, whoever is saying this has an issue with the railroad.

Let us know if they get this fixed.

Hi,

This sort of crud has been going on for a long time. Here's a photo of an 1897 incident.

This is from the Colorado Rail Annual # 13 covering the Florence and Cripple Creek narrow gauge and the Midland Terminal standard gauge.

Well worth borrowing the book from a library. The story in the text is longer and quite interesting.

I think this book is still available from the Colorado Railroad Museum.

This is going on now....

http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/ ... -the-rails

Ohare Tollway expansion is trying to get land around the Canadian Pacific Yard, the problem here is poor planning on the tollway and CP recognizes it and they are trying to operate their yard. The project did not start on proper planning and lots of construction has already been done and now they are trying to build into the yard, al lot of wasted money and this is the Governments/Tollway's fault, ramrodding their project without proper planning.

A lot of this is shades of the Eisenhower expressway construction which caused the abandonment of the CA&E.

On the other side...

http://www.nwitimes.com/business/transp ... 5343e.html

The South Shore has been going forward on the Westlake expansion, this is about economic development, and they are making a careful study where and what to do (unlike Ulster county just buzzsawing the road surfacing)

and in the thought about sports, The Chicago Cubs advertisements make the suggestion to use the CTA to get in and out of Wrigley field, there is a stop just a short block away to walk right to the ball park, the ball park fills 40,000 plus every game day and there is very little parking. There was a recent call to try to woo the Cubs further west to a new park with lots of car parking, the Cubs nixed that move.

And history shows, once you remove the tracks its harder to bring them back, CA&E and North Shore gone, it would cost millions to return them.

a little fodder to throw Ulster County's way.
