The three boxcars in New Hyde Park, NY shown in this picture are privately owned and not on the LIRR roster. They have Conrail markings under the graffiti and have been there since sometime in the 1980s. I've ridden past them many, many times and seeing them always makes me smile.

Really, I always thought they were owned by the railroad. Also weren't these cars originally SOO Line or am I thinking perhaps of the NY&A pair down in Brooklyn. Before I was a member they did try pulling these cars out only to discover that the track they were sitting on was "unstable" and the bearings were rusted beyond feasible repair oh well sadly.

Hi Cameron,

Maybe they were Soo Line at an earlier point, but the boxcars definitely have Conrail markings under the graffiti. The track is disconnected and I'm pretty sure it was a private siding. I've seen references to it having been for Chesler Plywood, but I don't know if that's the current owner.

I hadn't heard about the boxcars in Brooklyn you refer to (where in Brooklyn?), but perhaps you're thinking of those?

Best,

-Philip Marshall

NYA has a storage boxcar or two. LIRR still has a lot of old junk, but just about all of it is well past its lifetime and unlikely preservation candidates.

NY Cross Harbor had a decent stash of equipment until it was all scrapped a few years ago. They still have a homeless PRR N5 caboose.

This former Conrail crane is sitting in the West Trenton yard, I'm not sure if CSX owns it, or what its heritage actually is - but it looks to me like it's much older than from the Conrail days. (photo not mine, just found it on the internet)

NS's Rose Yard in Altoona was host to a large number of boxcars until about 2010. I recall every major Conrail predecessor, except for the CNJ and LV, was represented in there, including the PRR and NYC.

NS's Pitcairn Yard had some MOW cars still in PRR paint until around the same time period.

NS still has equipment rolling around in PC, RDG, and EL paint. I've even seen two cars in PRR paint still, logos and all.

The Buffalo and Pittsburgh isn't a class one, but they have many former Western Maryland coal hoppers in their fleet.

EDIT: One more I remember! Not a class one again, but Weirton Steel has a fleet of Former PRR boxcars for plant use.

I just saw this one last week, but I didn't realize how old it was until I researched it. It's the former ACL 250-ton wrecker "Waycross", apparently still owned and ready to use by CSX. Apparently it was built for the ACL in ~1946 and was converted to diesel in 1969. It's parked in the little town of Spruce Pine, NC near the former Clinchfield mainline. I'd guess there are plenty of areas along the Clinchfield where there'd be no easy way to get a side-boom Caterpillar or similar equipment in to deal with a wreck.

The crane at Spruce Pine is on the property of the Mitchel Lbr. Co. Bud Phillips, owner of the lumber company, bought the crane in 1993. Bud died a year or so ago so the crane's future is uncertain. It last worked for CSX out of Waycross, GA.

Interesting. I noticed a couple of other interesting crawler cranes (Koehring 305's) on the property as well. Looks like it was quite an operation at one time.

I heard two storys about this crane. First that Bud Phillips bought it with the idea of renting it back to CSX when they needed it. This never happened. Second, that Bud liked to play with it lifting and swinging heavy loads. Notice that the outrigger is out and blocked up. There is one other odd thing with it. This crane and Canadian Pacific #414501 have the same builder's number due to a factury error.

Hi,

This reminds me of the Atlanta & West Point/Georgia Road pile driver.

I may not recall the details correctly, but here goes,

The pile driver (I think it was A&WP) was donated to the Atlanta Chapter NRHS. I am not sure if it had been moved tot he Museum but I think it had.

In 1975, MARTA (Metro Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) was building the East-West Line and needed to move about a mile of Georgia Railroad near East Lake Station. The pile driver had not been out of service long (just a few months I think) and it was called back to place the pilings for the Georgia Railroad relocation.

Once complete, it was moved/returned to the Atlanta Chapter.

Last I've heard, Amtrak No. 737 is a 1947 vintage SW-1 that was still earning her keep at Washington Terminal. Amtrak also has a GE center cab that is shop switcher at Wilmington. I'm not sure of the build date of the center cab.

Maybe it won't work out. But maybe seeing if it does will be the best adventure ever.

Metra in Chicago still uses two SW-1s, #1-2. #1 is of 1939 vintage, and it is the oldest operating diesel locomotive in the U.S. that is not preserved.

Don't some pre 567 powered EMC switchers survive in revenue service, albeit repowered? They'd be older than a 1939 built SW1 if so.

I know it seems to hang out at the roundhouse in Scranton, but isn't Lackawanna #426 officially on the roster of the Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad for one? Or how about the EMC SW on the Thermal Belt Railway for another one? Then isn't there another EMC owned by Coors? I think there are several in total.

Any active high hood Alco's left?

Yes, I believe 2 High nose Centuries are left in service.

Livonia, Avon, and Lakeville 420 is a former Long Island Railroad unit which retains it high nose. 5 of the LIRR C420s survive, but only LA&L 420 is running.

The New York and Lake Erie has a former N&W C425 in operable condition as well, not sure how often it runs however.
