Here is a puzzle.

September 29, 1895 Buffalo Courier
September 28 The Dunkirk Engineering Works shipped a geared locomotive today to a sugar plantation near New Orleans.

Which plantation?
Was this the mythical Dunkirk #146?

John,

If you are not already aware, both of the books that theoretically would be expected to give you an answer--The Geared Locomotives of Dunkirk by David M. Hoffman, and The Climax Locomotive by Thomas T. Taber, the latter including a section on Dunkirk's production--tell you nothing, as both essentially imply "Dunkirk" locomotive production ceased at Dunkirk around 1892-93. Now, the first Heislers were built at Dunkirk before production was shifted to Stearns, so it's possible, if not likely, that this 1895 locomotive can be found in the Heisler production records......

I have both books and as you say there is nothing. The last known Dunkirk built was Eagles Mere RR #4 (Dunkirk #145) shipped in June 1894. Then there is this:

#146 Builder’s plate found in the river at Electron, WA 1978 Plate reads:
Builders’ No146
Dunkirk Locomotive
Patent Applied For
Dunkirk Engineering Co.
Dunkirk N. Y.
(The Electron Power Plant was built in 1903-04 by the Columbia Improvement Co. All track was standard gauge. A photograph of the plate (photo #1423) is in the Puget Sound Power & Light collection, Special Collections, University of Washington Library.)

Dunkirk only built one Heisler:

116 Heisler 14 tons shipped 07-02-91
F. A. Addington #1 Little Washington, NC
Licking Valley Ry #2(1st) Yale, KT 1896
