Mike, looking for grate and heating surface areas.

I'm guessing 60-70 Sq feet for grate area, but would like to be sure.

You will find that on the Form#4 for sure.

A representative of CPR's G3c class, No. 2317 has 75-inch drivers and 25x30-inch cylinders, and sustains 200 pounds per square inch of boiler pressure. With a grate area of 65 square feet, she has 3530 square feet of evaporative heating surface and 803 square feet of superheater surface, and weighs 319,000 pounds.

I took those figures from the steamlocomotive.com site I linked above. I don't know of a better place on the Internet to look for information on the specifications of the various steam types and classes, but I sometimes use other sources. -- Richard Leonard

Richard, for what ever reason, the steamlocomotive.com page you referenced in an earlier post would not load completely for me this morning. So I did a google search and came up with the quote from your excellent website.

Thanks Mike, I think this will suffice for my purposes.

I was trying to compare heating surfaces to K4 and a few other Pacifics, and estimate peak horsepower using rule of thumb that each square foot of great roughly equates to 40 HP.

So, we can guess 2317 produces a peak of about 2600 HP.

Sorry my google skills seem to be not so good right now.

I believe a more realistic calculation is one sixth of the grate area times the boiler pressure will give a more accurate peak horsepower. I come up with 2165 HP. Remember HP gives you the ability to go fast, available tractive effort is a better comparison in the shortline industry where the top speeds are typically 30 MPH or less, cause if you can't start it, you sure can't get it up to speed.

There were several ratios developed, such as one by Baldwin and another by Cole. I'm not sure what they exactly are, but they include more than grate area and boiler pressure.
