American steam locomotives in Great Britain

Nor should we forget the Ffestiniog Railway's 60cm-gauge 2-6-2T 'Mountaineer', built in 1917 for the British Army by ALCO (Cooke), C/N 57156. After WWI she saw service on the Tramway de Pithiviers à Toury in France before going to Wales in 1967.

In the locomotives-other-than-steam category, a portion of the Canadian National electric locomotive fleet that ran for many years out of Montreal was built by English Electric (electrical components) and Beyer-Peacock (mechanical components):

Some of the more obscure British built locos in Canada were the three Hunslet 0-4-0 diesel switchers that were used at Pacific Elevators in Vancouver, BC

Prairie Dog Central runs a locomotive numbered 3, originally built by Dubs of Scotland for the Canadian Pacific in 1882; this machine, though built in Great Britain, apparently incorporates a great deal of American practice, including bar frames.

This was built at a time that the USA and Canadian railroad systems were expanding -- a period with several transcontinental routes were completed. The American locomotive and car builders were pressed to meet the requests for equipment -- "the order books were full." This is probably why the CP bought equipment from Scotland built to American practice.

I have been correspondence related to the Carson & Colorado, a Nevada narrow gauge being built in the 1881-83 period. Baldwin Locomotive Works was writing to them saying they could take an order for locomotives to be built the next year (12 months after the letter).

The Chinese KF 4-8-4s mentioned above do have bar frames. Several UK built loco types for export order also possessed bar frames including NZGR "J" 4-8-2s, South Australian Railways "500" class 4-8-2s (later 4-8-4), 600 class 4-6-2s, 700 class 2-8-2s and South African 19D & 15F 4-8-2s. 25 class 4-8-4 locos built by Henschel and North British had cast steel beds.

As well as the Chinese KF in York NRM there is another example in the Beijing Railway Museum.
