The members of American Steam Railroad would like to invite everyone to the first public open house for the Reading 2100 on August 15, and 16. For more information please visit our site at http://www.fireup2100.org/news/

Rick, can you give us some idea of what the mechanical inspection to date has revealed about work necessary to bring her back to operation?

That's part of the intent behind the open house. Some more comprehensive information about the mechanical status of the 2100 will be published after this weekend.

A special announcement about the Fire Up 2100 Campaign will be made Saturday afternoon at 2PM.

Any word on what the "special announcement" is?

How "special" can it be if it hasn't shown up here 9 hours later?

You rate "specialness" by whether or not it's on TO or RYPN? ;) ASR made an announcement to those in attendance - pretty sure they'll bang the drum after the weekend.

Perhaps more to the point: Here it is 9:00 (Central time) Sunday morning, and no one from the RyPN community has mentioned anything.

I was hoping to be there today, but can't make it. So I'm more than usually eager to find out what the announcement was... even if only a one- or two-line comment or tweet.

Nothing on TO, RYPN, the Fire Up 2100 webpage, the American Steam Railroad Facebook page, or anywhere else for that matter. Gotta admit, the ASR people are good at keeping things under wraps.

OK, I'll get the rumor mill fired up...

They are going to remodel the engine to resemble that most iconic of American steam locomotives... the Baltimore & Ohio "Dockside". In fact, they'll have sufficient parts left over to assemble TWO Docksides... (ducking for cover)

Well, from what I've read, it looks like they are going to try and take advantage of the tube time they have left. I don't know if that was the announcement, but it may work out. The engine didn't sound like it was in as bad of shape as first thought. And doing any runs now may get them some funds for in the few years they have left.

I got there late yesterday and talked to one of the volunteers. He said they are going to have FRA in for a hydro soon. The group has done ultra sounds and there is no damage to the boiler as has been rumored.

They are starting their major fundraising campaign now. I didn't get a lot of details. I had hoped to take with Steve directly, but he was busy with some other people.

The engine looked good. I guess there is a big inspection report that will be release soon with all the findings. Over all I was impressed. They appear to know what they are doing.

Hopefully, the grates will go back in?

Yes, grates will go back as well as stoker. They are going to right that wrong.

The grates are still in it. They under the "floor" of the firepan.

So here's a question. Since the team has found no damage to the firebox after the poorly attempted oil conversion, who originally started the "rumor" around that the 2100 had this damage or was it speculation?
