NYC 0-6-0 damaged in runaway incident

I noticed that smokebox front sheet seems to have a lot of dents in it that occurred at some point in history prior to this runaway accident. I am referring to the smokebox front that surrounds the smokebox door, and not the door itself. It appears to have been struck by a heavy hammer leaving dents in 10-20 locations all around the circle. I wonder why that happened.

That is certainly encouraging. The frame broke off clean just ahead of the cylinder saddle, so a repair would involve removing the saddle and welding in new frame extensions. I expect the majority of the damage is going to be on the tender. Probably little to no damage to the rear of the locomotive itself.

If you're going to take her down to bare frames to make the repairs correctly, it would not make any kind of sense to not take advantage of the opportunity to go through everything involving heavy frame and cylinder work while it's all accessible. Of course, for just sitting there and looking like a painted park hulk, you don't need to repair the frame properly at all. Just patched together will do for cosmetics.

I hope that once the reacting is done, a real plan will be developed for an appropriate form of restoration or repair. I will pitch in an opinion that she's a very nice size for a small tourist or museum operation, while we don't need a lot more 4-8-4's out there looking for a chance to run..........

if the engine wasnt there the car would have barrelled thru and caused injuries +.

It took the brunt of what could have been a far more serious incident.

It sounds like repairs are very possible which is good.

FRA amends the brake system safety standards for freight and other non-passenger trains and equipment to strengthen the requirements relating to the securement of unattended equipment.

Specifically, FRA codifies many of the requirements already included in its Emergency Order 28,Establishing Additional Requirements for Attendance and Securement of Certain Freight Trains and Vehicles on Mainline Track or Mainline Siding Outside of a Yard or Terminal.

FRA amends existing regulations to include additional securement requirements for unattended equipment, primarily for trains transporting poisonous by inhalation hazardous materials or large volumes of Division 2.1 (flammable gases), Division 3 (flammable or combustible liquids, including crude oil and ethanol), and Class 1.1 or 1.2(explosives) hazardous materials.

For these trains, FRA also provides additional communication requirements relating to job briefings and securement verification.

Finally, FRA requires all locomotives left unattended outside of a yard to be equipped with an operative exterior locking mechanism. Attendance on trains is required on equipment not capable of being secured in accordance with the proposed and existing requirements.
This final rule is effective October 5, 2015.

I guess saving a steam locomotive saves lives. You see that folks. These things were built to last. This elderly century year old engine saved many lives that fateful day. It needs to be given a well deserved restoration.

I wonder if ANY of the people whose lives were saved by the locomotive realize the debt they owe to her.

Any updates on the extant of the loco's damage and what form of repairs will be made?
Is it sitting where it was at the time of the accident?
