It does a great job of showing how the front engine was separated form the rest of the articulated locomotive, and the loaded on to the low flat car for transportation.

Great find! Of note is that several things people had questions about got answered in this. One was a look at what was used for a support bar at the rear of the locomotive. Another was the two piles of timber under the front of the locomotive, when it was set down on the flat; those are locations of the sliding supports to transfer weight to the front engine.

Interesting to see the front engine and tender are riding together on the flat, the tender still on its trucks. Again, the whole works almost looks like it could go in a regular train with no clearance problems.

Most amazing was watching how the operators of the four side-boom tractors coordinated the lift and set down, all also coordinated with railroad employees from the B&O Museum. It was equally fascinating to watch how the tractors also had counterweights that could be adjusted by the operator to balance the lift.

Only complaint--I don't like rock music! Bah!

But what else would one expect from a steam fan!

Now, all we have to do is wait until the engine gets to Cumberland, where this whole process will be reversed, and then a bit of a wait again while the shop crew gets the girl in shape.

Time now to sit back and relax until 2015 or 2016 or whatever. . .

Great find! Just had to go to Hulcher's web site after viewing. Detailed site. Link to their Cat side booms:

No time to sit back and relax and wait. :) Join our WMSR Foundation, volunteer, or become a donor on this incredible project. Every dollar counts and you do not need to live here to volunteer. With the digital age the way it is we have been able to utilize several volunteers who are interested all over the country. All small and large donations are welcome. What skills and connections do you have? Join together with us: Preserving Railroad History for Future Generations.

Anybody know if it has been moved West yet, and if so, if it went as it's own train, or in a regular train?

As of yesterday it was still sitting outside the Restoration Facility in southwest Baltimore, not yet moved to the interchange.

Thanks Sandy. My guess is that if it is going to move in a regular train, one of the Baltimore transfer jobs will move it to one of the Baltimore yards, most likely Curtis Bay, where trains for Cumberland are usually made up. It's always possible it could move on a through train like Q375, but since I believe that train is now crewed out of Philly for Cumberland, they probably wouldn't want to delay it in Baltimore making the pick-up.

CSX has measured the dimensions and verified the tied down; we are ready to roll! The WMSR is currently coordinating with CSX on when #1309 will be picked up for movement from Baltimore to Cumberland, MD. More news as soon as we know it.

I always wanted to see C&O 1308 restored since I volunteer on it. I sort of do with twin sister 1309! I'm extremely excited. Best wishes to WMSR! Let's get steam on the gauge!

Another photo of the lift in Baltimore; those who wondered how Hulcher lifted the rear end of the locomotive have a good view of the rig used. I notice that the cables are cutting into the wooden blocks placed between them and the girder used for a lifting bar. Even empty, that locomotive must weigh a bit:

Also finally got a look at the Hulcher page with the side booms. I wonder if those machines are bidirectional, like a locomotive. I would think they would almost have to be in view of a shot of several of them carrying a dredge around, and even with this lift of C&O 1309.

WMSR Foundation reports that the loco has been handed off to CSX; transit info was released only to Foundation members, so happy hunting.

There is conflicting information being alleged about this movement, with another party claiming that WMSRF said Tuesday morning departure. For what it's worth most sources I'm seeing say train Q341 runs over the Cap and Met Subdivisions (i.e. through Laurel, DC, and back out through Gaithersburg).

For what little it's worth, I took a cruise around Locust Point and Riverside Yards this afternoon and saw no sign of the loco/cars on any of the "usual" departure tracks or "hiding places." Not to say they couldn't have buried the loco quite well, but........

... and while they're at it, why don't they duck over to that far loop near Fort McHenry and grab that C&O Vanderbilt tender that was abandoned there over a decade ago en route to the B&O Museum?

I don't think it's been quite that long since that tender was removed from Mt. Clare "A-Yard", along with the rest of the museum equipment that was there - including GG1 #4876. I'm thinking 7 or 8 years tops. About that time some people showed up to do work on it to prepare it for movement. I was told that it was either given or sold to another museum or group (I could not find out who exactly, this stuff is often hush-hush). I guess the deal for the tender fell apart somehow, and the museum is either not interested in doing something with it or has lost track of it. This was some time after the ex-B&O, ex-Amtrak E-8 was deaccessioned and sold to Bennett Levin as a parts engine for his other two E's (it was pretty thoroughly roached body-wise). I was conductor on the train that moved it to Philly from Baltimore, so that happened before Spring 2004 when I stepped up to Engineer full-time.

If it works Jessup, MD yard, then yes it would have to. If not, they try and send general freight during the day via the OML to keep it away from MARC and Amtrak. When I was there, Q341 was a Baltimore-crewed train, called for dinner time at Curtis Bay, and did work Jessup, usually getting to Brunswick around Midnight or later. Pretty much a junk train, usually had to double several tracks at Curtis Bay, possibly transferring cars to Jessup, as well as picking-up there, again often more than one track, often delayed leaving Baltimore because they had to stay out of the way of through trains, since it often spends over an hour tying up track one at Jessup. Guess they moved it over to Locust Point. The other question is if it is still a Baltimore-crewed train, or if they gave it to Cumberland. That could determine if it the H-6 makes it to Cumberland in one 12 hour day or not. Might end up in Brunswick for awhile waiting for a re-crew.

Latest report had it at Hancock a little after noon.

It seems delivery and unloading could start as early as Thursday.
