Really does look the worse for wear at the museum currently, almost as bad as a lot of park engines.

Well the Museum spent a lot of money fixing that small roof issue they had that might have otherwise been used on outdoor displays.

Don't let the external rusting fool ya, a full workover she's good as new.

How is this locomotive going to be shipped? Is it being disassembled and placed on flat cars or on it's own wheels? I know that there's a lot of CSX between Baltimore and Cumberland.

Will the locomotive will be taken apart and loaded onto the flat cars by the museum, in its restoration facility? Or will CSX do it all in its own shops?

Here is a great video of the C&O H6 being moved into the museum's restoration facility:

I think it's fair to say the only part the CSX will play in the move will be delivering the loaded flat car to the WMSR. I'm sure the 1309 will be broken down and loaded by cranes onto flatcars at the B&O museum and unloaded at WMSR. I suppose it will depend on clearances if the loco can be loaded as one onto a car or if the boiler will have to be seperated from the frame. Has anyone heard any speculation in that regard?

Sorry if I am uninformed.

Comparing this to the initial move of UP 4014, it seems like 1309 is moving far and fast. Was there bearing preparation first? The news stories on 4014 document a lot of dis-assembly and bearing preparation before rolling. Here we see 1309 with lots of moving parts intact and I am guessing it was on stationery display for a similar period. Or has this engine been regularly moved?

What's your definition of "regularly"? The B&O Museum does shuffle around at least some of the outside exhibits now and then. 1309 sat out in one of the parking lot tracks for a couple years, along with C&O 2705, then both were pulled back a while back to a more "hidden" track behind the car shop as the paint deteriorated. So, regularly moving it every six months? No. Not moving in thirty or more years? No, either.

N&W 475, as I remember, moved from Iowa to Strasburg aboard three flat cars--one with the boiler and cab, one with the frame and running gear, and one with separated tender and trucks. I strongly suspect there are similar plans for 1309, and indeed for a while several six-axle TTX flats were among the cars in the B&O Museum's "junk siding" in the "bad neighborhood" west of the Restoration Facility. The Facility does have a 30-ton overhead crane, as I recall......

I can't say what prep work the B&O museum did, but I know the one advantage they had over UPRR compared to the Big Boy: they knew exactly what condition the 1309 was in. They put it where it was, and they were responsible for taking care of it. The UP had NO IDEA what they were getting into, so they erred on the side of caution. And as for "far and fast," the 4014 moved further to get to active rails than the 1309 moved to get to that restoration facility, so I don't think it was AS crucial to disassemble the 1309 before the move - at any point they could have stopped and worked on problems without tying up a busy commuter line or main line. So there wasn't as much riding on everything going perfect.

Without "stealing the thread", might one extrapolate that the B&O Museum could be open to leasing other pieces from the collection in the future? Just a question, not piling up tinder.

I know when we moved Reading 2100 for Tom Payne (no need to comment about that), the entire locomotive was picked up and placed on an 8 axle QTTX flat car. I remember thinking this this must have an extremely high center of gravity, but it was not taller than our double stacks. I wonder how 1309 would compare with that size wise.
