At IRM, what about the 428?

I'm not a steam shop volunteer, but here is what I have:

It needs wheel work; which is waiting on a piece of shop equipment to be repaired (Planer?). The machine was at last report, nearly ready to test. The air pump is also being worked on. The project, like the shay, is only worked on when there are more volunteers than needed for 1630.

The shay has tubes swaged, and is having work done on the front truck, as well as on the staybolts.

Isn't the clock running on 428 at IRM? If I recall correctly her boiler was test fired several years ago.

I know it was test fired but someone with the steam department will have to chime in on the exact status of her boiler ticket. I seem to recall that the tubes were put in before part 230, and at the time it qualified for grandfathering.

As the last few tasks are slowly finished up on 1630 work will slowly move over to the Shay and 428. The Shay needs truck rebuilds, staybolt work, & the smoke box bottom installed. 428 needs a full mechanical rebuild. Yes, the clock is running on 428; she still has several years left on her.

Is there any update on NKP 587, I have not heard much of anything lately, and the News section on ITM's site has updates from June and July.

At Mid-Continent Railway Museum in North Freedom, WI, Saginaw Timber (Polson Logging) No. 2 should be in steam some time this summer. This 1912 Baldwin 2-8-2 was successful enough to be the inspiration for the nearly identical Polson No. 70 out at the Mount Rainier Scenic.

Word on the street is that in 2014 exReading 2102 will be evaluated to determine exactly what work will be required to get her back out. The final estimate will determine if work goes forward or not.

I'd also heard a rumor that Andy Muller had considered (or perhaps inquired about?) acquiring T-1 2100 from Tacoma instead. I've not been able to verify that rumor.

No inquiries on the 2100.

I'd chalk that up to nothing more than a rumor-nothing about it makes any sense, financially or otherwise.

Been curious about Union Pacific 428 after reading a Rail & Wire article about her tonight and wondered what the status was about her return to service?

Also curious what sort of lifespan her latest rebuild will give her? I recall that in 1984 she was all set to have a hydrostatic test done and she was planned to be ready for members day a few months later in 1985, but I'm not sure how many years they got out of that first restoration as I poked around IRM's online archive?

Should she be good to go until her next 15 year rebuild, minus routine maintenance and the inevitable unexpected repairs, when this latest long restoration concludes someday hopefully soon?

UP 428 is still a ways off from being in steam, a few years no doubt, but the restoration is coming along. Work on the wheel lathe in the shop has progressed recently and, once completed, the two wheel sets currently off of the locomotive will be repaired. The four axle boxes off of the engine need machining, but are close to done. The cab just got new window frames and is in the finishing stages of needed metal work. Once that's done, work will start on the cab floor with the hope of, sometime soon, rejoining the cab to the engine.

Work to be done on the engine includes taking the other two wheel sets off for examination and needed repairs, putting the front truck back on the engine and finishing some work on the tender. The repairs done to the two wheel sets off of the engine, including the complete rehabilitation of all four axle boxes, will probably need to be done to the two sets currently on the engine. It’s expected to go faster this time around, however, as we will have the needed tools restored and operating. The air compressor is also being rebuilt. There are, of course, other things that will need to be done, but this is the bulk of it.

Thanks for your interest!

Christian Ellis
