Looks to have been fairly stripped down since filming Lone Ranger. I like the spray paint black PVC plumbing all over it to make it look more "menacing".

I'm guessing this was filmed at the tourist railroad they're currently being stored at??

You can clearly make out in the production video, the diesel at the hind end, that is pushing these dummies around the loop.

as for the commercial, it looks like the Filmore and Western was chosen, filmed at the Grand Ave Crossing just outside Filmore. Could have Green Screened the loco into the scene...surely doesn't look like the loco is actually on site.

This sort of topic drives me insane sometimes...it's a Disney movie, for families and the general population, not for railroad preservationists. Suspend reality when watching this type of movie, it's not a documentary. And yet people see that the ballast is wrong, ties are wrong, and 99% of the general population doesn't care. Yet we are supposed to string up Jerry Bruckheimer because his film wasn't 100% accurate? Ugh...

Big Jim makes a good point--I think you could probably say the same thing about automobile hobbyists who find a 1964 car in a movie supposedly set in 1962. Being a retired telecomm technician, I notice when a telephone has a rotary dial and is a proper shade of black--but has modular cords that hadn't come into use when the story takes place. The Internet Movie Database has a special place to note "goofs" and "continuity errors" like these. For some, these anomalies can be more amusing than the movie itself.

I suppose they shoud have a "disclaimer" in the credits reading "any departure from actual railroad practices of the 19th century is done with artistic license and is not intended to bug the heck out of any foamers or old rails in the audience."

I would say this Disney film and railroad preservation and history are two separate universes. If this were Modern Movie Making Magazine, I might be less irked about melding the two here.."but heaven knows, anything goes.."

Years ago, I remember an old Disneyland TV show in which Walt himself said that "suspension of reality" was important in watching movies. I think the comment was in reference to cartoons, but it still holds true for many movies.

If the Lone Ranger trains are replicas and the railroad they are running on was created for the movie, being somewhat based on reality, then all the filmmakers were doing was a little freelance model railroading! :)

Which makes me wonder, will someone make an HO scale model of the movie's 5 mile loop and use a model diesel to push a non-powered model steamer around with HO people glued to the roofs of the coaches? :)

They stressed repeatedly in the video that they are real, this wouldn't be the first time Disney has built steam locomotive from scratch (4 of the 5 locomotives on the Disneyland Railroad were all built from scratch), and I couldn't see anything pushing them in the video.

Getting back to the subject of railway preservation and movies, many years ago, a railway museum rented out a wooden streetcar to a film production. Somewhere in the process of taking the car from the museum to the location and back, the car was damaged. I don't recall the whole story, but either the museum had to fix the car without any compensation, or it was like pulling teeth to get any claim settled between the movie co. and the transportation co. Some years later, an older and wiser museum organization had another deal with a more reputable producer, and among other things, had a number of their cars professionally repainted with industrial-grade coatings as part of the contract.

A pal of mine rented out some of his WW2 vehicles to the production company for the TV movie, "Mission of the Shark," about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis at the end of the war. All of the vehicles came abck with some kinds of damages, a command car had multiple punctures in the real leather seats. One Jeep had a carb totally missing, he assumed to get another running quickly on set and never returned. He had to eat that entire loss.
After that, I realized never to loan or rent anything for these reasons...
