I had to go to the animal shelter across the street so here is the view today, from approximately the same angle as the shot at the top of the thread. No cars visible. I didn't enter the property or attempt to surveil it from all angles.

Maybe it's in transit via Jimmy Joe Bob's Rigging & House Moving but I'm not holding my breath.

Sad. Well, maybe some other car will benefit. It's not clear if that price was for all 4. Did both cars have the same kind of truck?

The caboose appears in the background of photo of the car with the truck sale listing. No word on that.

I asked. That's $30,000 for each truck. Next!

"Boogie Bolsters" on the C&NW trucks = strike one.
Broken truck frame on one of the C&NW trucks = strike two.
Equalizer severely rubbed on one of the CRI&P trucks = strike three.

$30K was high even if it was for all 4.

Did he say why the cars were scrapped in the first place? Not enough time to sell them? I'm curious what the reason was for this railcar Saturday night massacre.

OK, because I'm curious, a learning moment, please.

"Boogie Bolsters"???

Couldn't spot the broken truck frame in the photos. Is it something obvious or just that I don't know what to look for?

Thanks in advance for taking the time to explain.

Boogie bolsters aka scissors spring plank. Think bear trap big enough for a 70 ton passenger car.

Stephen,

All fair questions. "Boogie Bolsters" is a "Les Kasten-ism". Hayneshopcat is correct in calling it a "scissors spring plank", but I'm thinking our friends at GSC referred to them as "Bolster Roll Stabilizers". Its kind of hard to describe unless you've seen it. The typical spring plank is one solid piece (casting) running from side to side at the bottom of the bolster springs, connecting the swing hangers from side to side. The "Bolster Roll Stabilizer" has two multiple pieces to make up up the spring plank -- its actually pinned to the bolster between the hangers.

Anyway, they are preferred/desirable for high speed service, and especially observation/tail cars. As the name implies it stabilizes "bolster roll" -- think high speed in curves. Applications that come to mind are ATSF postwar ISH trucks, CZ and/or CB&Q postwar Budds and the 1946 L&N ACF Aluminum cars. I want to say the 1949/1950 SR 5 bedroom obs cars either had them or had the Bolsters that would have accepted them as an upgrade. They are a maintenance pain in the butt with numerous moving parts and pose considerable risk, above and beyond the usual, to personnel servicing them. I would guess that "scissors spring plank" was shop slang after they saw what happened to the first guy that tried to work on them...

As far as the crack goes -- look at the second picture from the left in the E-bay ad. Zoom in on the upper left corner -- its hiding behind the slack adjuster motor. This spot is similar to where the Southern 30181s crack only on the outside.

I've looked at several sets of CRI&P trucks and much like these they show signs of years of neglect as you might expect from a bankrupt carrier. We just installed a set of CRI&P trucks for a customer that were in very nice shape, but you could see where much heavy work had been done to correct the years of neglect.
