New/Restored Steam in 2013?

I did a little digging on their website, and there is a newer update on the engine (from 2011). Still, it seems as if they could do a bit better job on keeping folks informed as to progress on the Ten-Wheeler. To get the update, go to the groups home page and go to the bottom of that page and check the What's New highlight.

Mitch -

If I read their website correctly, it is a cosmetic restoration only. BUT, they leave the door open for an attempt to restore it to operation at a later date. Right now the emphasis is on the 1364.

(We had hoped to have both the locomotive and tender there this year, but there's still a lot of work needed before the locomotive can attend, including getting the independent braking system back in place and operational and replacing several parts that were stolen last summer by metal thieves; we've made progress on the braking components, but replacing the stolen parts will take quite a bit longer and won't happen in time for this year's event. There's still next year, though...)

The 2-8-2T Hammond Lumber Co #17 will be back in service after its 1472 at the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad. The Chiggen and the 17 are both virtually neck and neck in terms of restoration. Stathi and Brian put water in the #17 for the first time in 4 years over the weekend.

The 2-8-2T Crossett Western #10 is slated to be back in service at Chelatchie Prairie Railroad this summer as well.

Lots of tank action in the Northwest!

From the recent thread "Help Needed!" about sisters 2156 and 2153 at MTM, it appears that NP #2152 is certainly in no worse shape than those two Q-3's, and might possibly even be in a bit better shape.

The Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad will see its ex-Hammond Lumber Co. 2-8-2T #17 (ALCO, 1929) returned to service this year. The #17 was taken out of service for its FRA 1472-day inspection in January, 2010, although work on the locomotive didn't begin in earnest until February, 2011. The project, headed up by CMO Stathi Pappas, has been progressing at a rapid pace. To date, all major boiler work has been completed (lower 1/3 of firebox replaced, partial door sheet, throat sheet knuckle patches, new tubes and flues, over 270 new rigid and flexible stays). Twenty-one new superheater units (manufactured in our shop by Stathi and crew) await installation following a successful boiler hydro. All plumbing on the locomotive is being replaced with double-strength pipe and fittings (with socket-weld style fittings where the piping will be under the saddle tank). All valves on the locomotive have been replaced with new. Still to come is running gear work, including dropping all four driving wheel sets so that tires can be re-profiled, crown brasses and hub liners replaced as needed, shoe and wedge work as needed, etc.. The equalizing and brake systems will similarly be thoroughly gone through. The #17 has always been a strong runner, but throughout this project the focus has been and continues to be on making the #17 as safe and reliable as possible.

As an aside, the saddle tank seen in the photo is not the #17's, but is in fact a brand new tank for ex-Santa Cruz Portland Cement #2, Stathi's privately owned Porter 0-4-0 (mentioned previously in this thread).

I'm not sure what they're looking at for a completion date, but the Cloquet Terminal's Facebook page now has photos of boiler work underway (including the UT testing for her form 4) on the D&NE no. 28. Whatever really happened up there on July 4, it looks like they mean business now and this is no longer just a "cosmetic" restoration.

I just talked to the museum's Executive Director and he said that they only planned on a cosmetic resto. But maybe the CTRR is throwing their own money at it and leasing it for operation? Idk...
