Twas the Milwaukee Road and Great Northern that had electrified divisions. NP might have wished for same through Stampede Tunnel, but no such luck.

Both VGN and N&W had electric divisions to get over the toughest grades and were very successful. Neither is highly popularly celebrated noted, but the railroads knew it, and did it. Milwaukee road/Northern Pacific both had electrified divisions.

For some of us, it's like trying to choose your favorite kind of music. Electric is my heritage, being a Pacific Electric fan (with a minor in narrow-gauge electric, i.e. LA Railway/LATL). Steam is impressive, and I know enough about steam to have explained the "innards" of our operating 2-6-2 when it was dismantled for maintenance. Most of my experience as a railfan and short stretch as a railroad employee has been with diesels. Heck, I even like horse power, whether at Disneyland, Douglas on the Isle of Man, or the Arden Farms line up north.

Please put me down for electric, but with an asterisk because it's not my exclusive interest.

Electric seems to have the capability to vote in polls. Also they are somewhat easier to start.

Ride behind - Electric
Repair - Diesel (at least 1st gen)
Operate - yup - Steam

Ride behind - none of the above, unless we're talking about something like Cass or the New River Gorge. At my stage in life, passively following without actual involvement isn't very interesting without other challenges involved.

Operate - steam.
Repair - steam.

Get around town - electric.
Move something in the yard NOW - diesel.
