Now that we're in the New Year...let's look ahead to the upcoming year in steam restorations. What engines are/will be returning to active service in 2013?

The 463 (K-27) on the Cumbres & Toltec should be ready around the opening of the season in May. Great Smoky Mountains will likely see something moving forward with the 1702, as American Heritage has made some public statements about work commencing in February.

I would keep an eye on the 0-6-0 in Stearns, Kentucky, the 1630 at Illinois Railroad Museum, the AT&SF 2926 in Albuquerque, and the "Chiggen" at Mt. Rainier Scenic.

I'll be interested to see where CNJ 113 up in Minersville PA ends up running.

Maine's WW&F Railway Museum may substantially complete restoration of 1891 Portland 0-4-4 Forney No. 9 in 2013, 80 years after it was last run on the WW&F.

This locomotive, incidentally, is a veteran of three of Maine's five two-foot gauge railroads. It was built for the Sandy River, then served the Kennebec Central before winding up on the WW&F.

Not well known yet, but Stathi Pappas, CMO @ Mt. Rainier Scenic Ry. in Mineral, WA should have his ex H.J. Kaiser 0-4-0T running after a complete rebuild.

She was part of a small fleet of this type that were located in Oroville, CA. If memory serves, she was still sitting out in an open field there in 1966 when I photographed her. She was sold and displayed off of HWY 99 near Lodi at a business that was known for its fried chicken, hence the nickname Chiggin.

When he gets done with her, should be a really neat interesting locomotive.

I'm pretty sure the 1897 Baldwin 4-4-0 at Greenfield Village should be running sometime this summer.

From the last update I seen, it looks like we might actually see BLW 26 at Steamtown run this year..

Milwaukee Road 261 will be out and about this year.

And with luck, some new enterprises will undertake restoration of long forgotten locomotives from parks or museums.

Actually Stathi's restoration work is now fairly well known, Railfan & Railroad magazine ran a nice article documenting the project in the September 2012 issue.

The Hocking Valley Scenic's 060 Baldwin will be ready the summer of 2013.

Train Crew

On Oregon's narrow-gauge Sumpter Valley Railroad work is expected to be finished up on our 1920 vintage ALCo Mikado number 19. We had originally hoped to have her in steam for 2012, but there were unexpected delays and a scheduling conflict or two.

It is hoped (famous last words) that #85 will join Flagg Coal #75 and Lehigh Valley Coal #126 by the end of the year as another traveling engine for Gramling Locomotive Works. After we got started on it we found that there was more sheet work in the firebox than we thought at first (sound familiar?) but we still think there is a good chance to have it done by the end of the year. We haven't decided what the name on it will be as of yet. The first owner was A E Dick. At this time we are not very enthused about painting DICK on the side of our engine. When it is done it will be virtually identical to #75.
