Tearing down CNR 47 would be the best option in my opinion. In order to get her running a full documentation study of her parts would be required, and she's been down for so long, tearing her down to the frame and basic boiler would be prudent anyway. Double-ended design, economical firing, and close in appearance to similar locomotives of the early 20th Century, she's beautiful. Furthermore, being a Canadian locomotive, shop crews aren't held to the standard of precise, historical reproduction and techniques. They can do what is economical and functional when shopping her.
As for 759, she's a great locomotive in good shape, and if we were talking about leasing out big engines, I'd say "go for it". She is much too big for day rides up and down the tourist track.
Stick with typical steam era branch line locos. MEC 519 is a nice candidate in that respect.

Amen to that whole comment.

my top 3 choices would be #47, #519, and #15. All need a lot of work. we already mentioned above. #15 needs a new front tube sheet and tender tank repair IIRC. #519 is in pretty good shape to but people who work with steamtown told me she'd need a stoker.

Funny, there's a stoker up for grabs in the RyPN Classifieds. Whether or not it can be made to fit 519 or even work at all is open to question, but it's there, for free..... [disclaimer: offered to bona fide non-profit educational institutions only--and Steamtown qualifies, I'm sure....]

This would be a good time to point out that the fact that 47's paperwork was lost decades ago has no bearing on whether she can operate now in the U.S.

As J. David Conrad aptly pointed out in another thread about the 47, all of the paperwork you'd have to create for a Form 4 would be the paperwork you would need to legally operate it, or any other locomotive in the Steamtown Collection.

Very Productive day yesterday! Pete and J.T. cut the pilot truck springs down to fit, did the final fitting of the journal boxes and then Dan started to final fit the oil wells down for the journal boxes. Matt worked on cleaning up the #1 driver journal boxes, sanded and polished the brass. Ken and I worked on taper reaming the bolt holes for the cross tie bracket where the radius arm connects to the frame. Stay tuned for the date when we plan on installing the pilot truck!!!!!!!!!!!

We finally made it! The pilot truck is together and resting on her own wheels. Great effort by all over the last year to get there.

Can we paint that wheel to get rid of the circus paint before we install it?

We? Are you a volunteer involved in this endeavor?

I am no longer surprised. Here, we have a grassroots effort of volunteers that engaged Steamtown with a workable plan. They tracked down most of the missing parts for this locomotive, fabricated the rest, and now have made significant progress. Now that their project has reached a significant milestone, that the 565 will be a 2-6-0 once again, we get a complaint about "circuit paint."

Indeed I am. The reason I call it circus paint is because it was applied by the former ringmaster who shall not be named.

ROFLMAO! Easy gents we are all friends here. We are planning on getting it all painted before it goes in. I don't like the "circus paint" either. :)

We have some measurements that we need to make the final hole where the pin goes thru the radius arm, that the gray arms going out the back. We will have to take them off to bore the hole and install a bushing. Then we can put it back together and then paint it all up.

Matt, get your paint brush ready! LOL

Then my apologies. I missed the context. I extend my congratulations to you on this wonderful project. Looks good. Keep up the good work. Once again, I apologize for my misunderstanding.

Haha Matt. I think we have some correct paint in the shop to make sure we properly paint her. :)

Our last weekend workday was this Sunday. The shop stops weekend coverage starting next month. So we will be back on the weekends starting in April. I will still try to get up during the week to continue our forward progress. Here are some pics for this last weekend.
