Here is the journal box, brass, grease box, spring and pins. It's been a long time coming!

So to speak, if she ever were to be restored to operation, (just throwing it out there), what would she need mechanically?

Yes, and why do you think it was not completed by that owner. Once the boiler tubes were removed severe wastage was noted on at least one of the boiler courses and the front tube sheet. It needs to stay as a static display. Yes gobs of money could fix it, but there are other priorities with in the the Park that have priority in my opinion.

Mike Tillger.

Mike, I should have added a qualifier to my "gobs of money" comment-that it would have to be sufficient to to fund a variety of other projects first.

It would be nice (in a world without constraints or trade-offs) to have a Lackawanna engine running, but the reality is that this engine would absorb an enormous amount of capital that could produce better operational returns, if applied elsewhere.

A 2-6-0 won't real do anything more than the Baldwin 26 will do, and it can't pull an excursion. If you really want to go after an engine without a trailing truck, the IC 790/RV 15 would be the ones to pursue-and lets not forget, there are not only other engines, but rolling stock and real estate.

In short, I agree with Mike.

I believe if steamtown were to persue another engine, it'd be either #15 or #46. Being both are in really good shape. Lets not forget 759 which is the best in shape of the 3.

She's also a heck of a lot more engine than the park needs or wants-not to mention the money that would be involved, which is tight enough as it is.

Back to the image Steve posted above, pardon my ignorance, but what is the part in the center of the assembly, labeled 565 #1? To my untrained eye, it appears as if it normally wouldn't be there?

Max,
It is the partially completed oil cellar, they will cut out a half circle for the axle to finish it. The journal brass is dropped down some from the box, imagine the full circle from the brass thru the cellar.

Thanks Mike. Been away for a few days.

We have to size the brass up to the axle next then we will do the final cut of the grease wells.

The 565 will have her place at Steamtown. And she will be a beautiful center piece when done.

I would like to see the 210 or the 519 restored to operation. But I think the best one would be one of the little tank engines. Lot more bang for the buck and less cost to operate. Just my 2 cents.

Tearing down CNR 47 would be the best option in my opinion. In order to get her running a full documentation study of her parts would be required, and she's been down for so long, tearing her down to the frame and basic boiler would be prudent anyway. Double-ended design, economical firing, and close in appearance to similar locomotives of the early 20th Century, she's beautiful. Furthermore, being a Canadian locomotive, shop crews aren't held to the standard of precise, historical reproduction and techniques. They can do what is economical and functional when shopping her.
As for 759, she's a great locomotive in good shape, and if we were talking about leasing out big engines, I'd say "go for it". She is much too big for day rides up and down the tourist track.
Stick with typical steam era branch line locos. MEC 519 is a nice candidate in that respect.

No Joe, perhaps I was unclear. CNR 47 requires a total tear down to her frame and boiler, a complete inspection and documentation in order to get a shot at running once again in the US. Okay, that's not unexpected, and a smart thing to do. Steamtown's shop can use more modern techniques to repair and present the Canadian locomotives since they do not represent historic artifacts and equipment from U.S. companies. There is a fine line which Steamtown's shops can cross in the rebuilding process with their Canadian steam power. That is not to say they would cut them up, disfigure, or change their styling. What we would look for in such a rebuild would be an economical, safe, modern, and compliant locomotive. Externally, she would look like the CNR X10a 4-6-4T she was in commuter service out of Montreal.
