Out of curiosity (unless I missed it), why the poll of our smart device usage?

To make a somewhat nonscientific inquiry, in order to have an assessment of the proliferation and penetration of these uses for a second thread which will be a "thinkpiece".

Communication is very good, and I'm constantly frustrated by not having enough of it during brainstorming sessions that turn into musing when nobody else participates. I wouldn't assume antipathy to specific technologies is the same as Luddism or refusal to communicate. In my case, I'm bombarded with crap from "communication devices" that isn't worth the trouble to even read and delete. I'm hampered with trifocals and old hand injuries that make small interfaces way too intricate and hard to manipulate - I have a blackberry assigned to me for work, and I find I need to use a pencil and stab at keys with the eraser to keep from hitting multiples at once. Amd, there are simply many times I'd rather wait until I have nothing else going on to receive, contemplate or respond to a communication, so being unavailable when I want to be unavailable has a lot to recommend it.

Make them easy to use, eliminate drivel and commercialism, and make them only work in specific zones and I'll take another look.

Well, I've found someone who beats the guy whose cell phone ring tone is someone hollering A.G. Bell's proposed "Ahoy, Ahoy!"

My wife bought me a iTouch last Christmas. I use it on my daily commute for listening to audiobooks and music, as well as playing the latest version of Angry Birds. That is the extent of my journey into iWorld at the moment. Our church switched to an e-newsletter with a paper option available for pick up. I still prefer the paper version. I did borrow a Nook in lieu of taking a laptop along on a vacation. The Nook was handy for e-mail and internet access and much easier to carry. When the current laptop dies I may go to an iPad for ease in handling and also to keep up with the grandkids' technology. lol.

Ah. Well I have both an iPhone and iPad 2 (as stated earlier) but have not used either yet to access RYPN. I'm sure the iPad 2 could view the site well, but have not tried it yet.

Ahhh...how cool it would be to have an App for this site. ;)

iPhone but it's pretty awful. Not Apple's part, it's their usual excellence (for what it is; a 3" screen.) The problem is the cellular data network. WAY not ready for prime time.. certainly not wroth the $2500 total cost of ownership ($300 phone + 24x$90/month contract.) Yes, you can read RyPN with it... with a magnifying glass... even possible to post, but you wouldn't want to.

iPhone. I've finally moved into the 21st Century. Other than phone calls and messaging, I use it sparingly for now to do things like checking email when away from the home/office based cinder block. I find the touch pad keyboard a bit too "touchy" but I'm getting used to it. Still many things to explore and learn.

Well, I can't speak for this site, but Railroadforums supports Tapatalk, an iPhone and Ipad app that lets you browse forums in a manner that's more friendly to mobile devices. Works great, and quite a few of my members use it.
