Where can I find the time allowed between Clean, Oil, Test, and Stencil for UC brake valves. I need a copy of the regulation to add to some training manuals I am preparing. I know I have seen it, I just can't lay my hands on it right now. This is for an operation that is under CFR 49, but not under part 238 which excludes historic and scenic railroads.
Thanks in advance for your help.

15 months. This according to the old AAR spec.

Perhaps Steve Z. can cite the actual number designation of the spec and/or documents.

I'll try to answer the question, absent Mr. Z's wisdom.

The actual location of the rule in question is found in 49 CFR 232 Appendix B, which are parts of the old (pre May 31, 2001) Rule 232, which still apply in certain circumstances. In 232 Appedix B, you will be refered to the applicable AAR or APTA test, which tells you how to test the brakes, and for the U-12-B brakes, it will refer you to pamphlet 5039-4, Sup 3, which is the latest AAR and manufacturer revision of the passenger test codes (dated 1991). As to the frequency, it is also kind of obliquely referenced in Appendix B 232.17(B)(2) which will refer you to the lastest revision of AAR S-045 of the AAR Manual of Standards and Practices, which is out of print and no longer supported by the AAR. In the latest revision of S-045, which was the 1984 edition , you find in Section 2.1.2 ,the 15 month COT&S interval for the U-type brakes.

Kind of convoluted...

I can not locate the S-045 standard in my 1981 edition of the AAR manual, it is not listed in the index, neither is S-044, but it is included as the last item in the manual. It is a duplicate copy of pamphlet 5039-4, Sup 3. Does anyone know where or from whom I might obtain a copy of the elusive S-045 standard?

Thanks in advance,
Mike Tillger

As I could not post links to all of the above items, I did not reply, but I have scanned copies of about everything. Send me your email address, Mike.
