The next step can be the EMD motel in the cab of an old SD or GP where you inflate your air mattress with a hose from the exhaust of the windshield wipers and heat your meals by wrapping them in aluminum foil and putting them up against the exhaust manifold on the engine.

Don't forget the hammock tied to the cab doors. I've seen that myself on the second unit of my train one night. Stowaway had himself a nice little rolling motel room.
