The Newport RI dinner train has IIRC 2 44 tonners, and the Old Colony Line in Newport has 2 45 Tonners, and there is a 3rd 45 Tonner in private hands on the same line.

At the Connecticut Eastern RR Museum, in Willimantic, Ct, we have the ex LIRR #400, only 44 tonner they had, currently she is painted pseudo NY,NH&H and marked #400. When we talked to our local Cat dealer, they didn't give us a long lead for parts when we were considering rebuilding the spare engine for her, thankfully her water pump was updated to the later version, but IIRC Claremont & Concord has made new waterpump shafts for those who have the older style (with the exposed shaft and a spring loaded mechanical seal)

Also Just last week we took delivery of New Haven Terminal siderod 45 ton GE #0413. It will be a while till she is up and running but she seems to be in good condition for a locomotive that was built in 1943 and has spent between 1/2 to 1/3rd of her life within 1 mile of salt water. Her history is as follows, ex Carpenter Technology, Bridgeport, Ct #9, exx Tube City Iron & Metals, Mifflin, Pa, exxx General Electric, Pittsfield, Ma, exxxx Arlington Mills, Lawrence, Ma #2. She ran when she was last shut down about 3-4 years ago, or so we were told. The fun part will be converting her back to manual control from her current status as a remote controlled locomotive.

Our Hartwell 2 has the modern style pumps. NYO&W 104 has the old style, and the shafts are pretty bad. We have the ability to make new ones, and intend to do so in the near future. We have a junk D-17000 with the exposed shaft pumps that can be used as patterns.

Hmmm. Unless I'm missing something I don't see this on anybody's list, and it deserves mention. I'm pretty sure they have it operational, if not necessarily fully finished....Arcata & Mad River 101:

What about the 47 ton GE's that started out on the Oahu Railway & Land Company on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu?

Oahu Railway & Land Co. #15 and #19, built in Oct 1943 as serial nos. 27538 & 27539.
(Now known as Georgetown Loop Railway #15 and Cumbres & Toltec Scenic #19)

Both were equipped with two (2 each) Caterpillar D-17000 diesel prime movers.
These were built as 47 tonners, even with the concrete under the hood GE says they were originally 47 tonners. Four GE 733 traction motors each. These traction motors do not have blowers to cool them, so they do not have a long duty cycle.

Notice the trucks carry the draft gear, and the trucks also connect to each other under the cab, thus the trucks carry all of the draft buffing forces and the cowl and cab just float on top of the trucks. This was an early diesel frame design and it preceded the modern I-beam framed diesels we know today. The feature also allowed a shorter locomotive height.

Also, Newfoundland RY #5001, built 3'+6" gauge, Weighed; 97,800 Lbs
Tractive effort; 13,000 Lbs. (continuos). Its now down in Peru.

Stewartstown #10? Is that a GE 44 tonner?

At today's STRT board meeting I asked those present about #10. "Under the hood" Stewartstown #10 is a GE 44-ton loco, in original condition as received from the Coudersport & Port Allegheny Railroad. While the engines have been rebuilt over the years, they are otherwise "original." -- Ray

Steam Railroad Institute in Owosso, MI has a 44 tonner, ex Detroit & Mackinac RR #10. Was formerly a CM&StP RR locomotive. Can't remember it's number while on the Milwaukee. It still has the Caterpillar D17000 prime movers. Stored non-serviceable in our building. We'd be entertaining offers on this critter. . . . .

Two 44 toners were just moved/sold from the Claremont Concord RR in Claremont,NH.
They are going to the "Coastal Heritage Society's Savannah, Ga. Roundhouse Railroad Museum". You can read about them here "http://www.eagletimes.com/ET/Story/080929-amo-ClmttraintoGeorgia".
One of them is the ex Boston & Maine #119.

She was B&M blue at the time, but the 119 was the first locomotive I ever ran sometime around 1973. Still in Claremont, NH a few short weeks ago when I shot this picture...

The Bluegrass Railroad in Versailles, KY has the former Kentucky Utilities 44 tonner. Currently painted in the green scheme that she wore at the Brown (KU) Power Plant. We hope to repaint her some day into the red scheme she wore while switching the power plant that is just off of the BGRM line.

Ed K,

Just a correction, the 2 centercabs at the Valley Railroad in Essex Ct are 90 ton units. One of which, 0901, IIRC is currently the oldest running diesel-electric locomotive in the US, serving in regular revenue service. 0901 was built in 1936, not sure of her history or build #.
