I need a pair of sliding cupola windows for my wide vision cab. They measure 20x28. I've been in contact with what became of JT Nelson and haven't heard back. Does anyone out there in rypn land happen to have a pair near the Ohio Valley?

I'm pretty sure some later built cabooses actually used EMD loco side windows. EMD used those same windows from GP-7's till they went to the wide cab locomotives.

I'm probably going to have to try that route first. I spoke with what became of JTNelson and they have suggested the same. I could try to get my windows replaced with lexan or similar. I am waiting for a call back from my local MP&E inspector about the windows right now. I see a part of 49CFR223.3 that looks like it allows for me to replace them with non type 1 or 2 glass if used in preservation. If that ends up being the case, I'll do it.

As long as your caboose isn’t in revenue service on a general system railroad, you are exempt from Part 223 glazing requirements.

I got that word back from my local MP&E inspector. I will just end up replacing the glazing inside with lexan.

You might consider acrylic instead of polycarbonate (Lexan). Acrylic is more UV stable and in my opinion, a little easier to work with. True, it is less impact resistant, but still better than glass. Acrylic is usually less expensive, too.

I am thinking of using laminated glass like a windshield if I can get the frames apart.

My windows are that style. Your's look narrower. Mine were 28x22. Locomotive windows are 18 3/4 x28. You may be able to get away with just putting in loco windows.

I ended up going with 1/2 lexan. I was able to source both window replacements for $170.

I used the laminated glass for just a little less. Nice to have clear windows in the bay. As long as nobody shoots at it we should be fine... Now for the rounded ones.
