The Bytown Railway Society continues its restoration of the cab interior of CP Royal Hudson 2858 residing within the Canadian Museum of Science and Technology located in Ottawa. This engine is equipped with a "signal foam-meter" manufactured by the Electro Chemical Engineering Corporation of Chicago. Discovered under many coats of paint is a metal plate measuring 8 x 5.5" on which was printed operating instructions for the foam meter, specifically "Signal Foam-Meter Electromatic Blowoff Instructions." Of course, removing the overpaint has in turn removed much of the text printed on the plate. Does anyone have such a plate, or pictorial reference or know where reference can be found? If information can be found we can recreate a new one.

SLSF 1630 at IRM has one of those meters...but I do not recall seeing a plate.

Santa Fe 3751 has one as well.

Solution: somebody who has one Xerox it and send the paper copy to Royal Hudson for use as a full size template. I've recreated gage faces and such this way before.

Check with these folks. Maybe they have the info you need or you may be able to re-create the printed info based on maintenance standards.

I don't have access to an instruction plate. Good luck in tracking it down. Here's more information on the Santa Fe 3751's Signal Foam-Meter that may be of interest.

In addition to the foam meter, the locomotive is equipped with a foam separator atop the boiler ahead of the cab. However, the solenoid and electromatic blowoff valve that release foam into the separator have not been used in excursion service. The original equipment usually included a trough in the boiler headspace that collected the foam, but this feature was not included in the 3751's restoration. The manufacturer's literature indicates that the automatic release equipment was optional.

In April 2014 a new electronic version of the foam-meter was installed and successfully tested on the 3751. On one occasion, the white "Safe Foam" lamp triggered when ascending a flyover with water high in the glass. The system was probably triggering by high water rather than foam. This lamp has a 29-second delay.
