Baldwin locomotive blueprint lists for 1941 to end of production.

Did you know that you can put together a list of blueprints that went with any Baldwin Loco built after 1941.
The “Pennsylvania State Archives” has all of the Baldwin blueprints and information that existed at the end of business in the mid 1950’s and this collection goes back to 1938 when the Baldwin cataloging system changed dramatically. Nothing exists in this collection that was built prior to 1941.

A person wanting to have these drawing lists, which are required to compile himself a full list of drawings for any 1941+ Baldwin locomotive, is faced with the prospect of having to purchase the microfilm for $100, then either spend about $300-$500 for a decent microfilm reader or go to a public library that offers the use of a microfilm reader every time he wanted to do some research on his microfilm list.

There is a group planning to buy a copy of these drawing lists on microfilm and have the lists professionally transferred onto DVD. We want to gather as many people as possible that are all interested in having these lists. Everyone is going to pitch in a small amount (depending on how many people participate and the cost split equally between each member). Each project member will receive a finished DVD containing the blueprint lists mailed to your continental USA address for your participation in the project. Those living outside the Continental USA can add a few bucks to cover their particular shipping costs. If we can get 20 people to participate the cost will be about $20 each.

Those interested should PM me here. I’ll keep track of the number or participants and let you all know your cost prior to asking for your portion of the project. There will be no profit on this group project.

Below is a partial list of all the Baldwin “narrow gauge” locomotives that were built after 1938. Every locomotive listed here along with probably 15 times more standard gauge locomotives would be able to be searched and you could then compile a list of drawings for all those locomotives.

Men there seems to be some confusion about what this DVD will contain.

It will contain the 1941+ locomotive sales orders, new blueprint titles and numbers.

Using that info is the only way to then compile a list of blueprints for a specific 1941+ Baldwin locomotive. You can then take your list, call or write Penn St and order the blueprints that you need for your project, but you’ll also have to pay for them..

The DVD you purchase will not contain all or any blueprints.

Right now you can not call Penn State Archives and buy a blueprint or a set of blueprints, unless you already know which blueprints you need. PN State can not tell you which blueprint goes with what locomotive. The only way to know what drawings go with which locomotives is to have a copy of the lists that we are putting onto DVD. That is why we are working on this project.

I think some of you might have thought that you were going to get a DVD containing all the Baldwin blueprints as scans for $50. If that did happen the cost would cost closer to $50,000, so that DVD will never be created.

If you want to build a 1941+ Baldwin, the DVD that will be created by this project is the best and least expensive way to put your list of blueprint titles and info together.

December 7th is going to be the closing day this group scan-to-DVD project purchase.

We currently have 9 people, so that puts the current cost at $45 per person, (and $5 of that is your continental USA shipping).
You will never get this list on DVD for less than $300.00 again. If you ever wanted it or think you will ever need it, this is your only opportunity to get it at a reasonable cost.

I'm going to allow those that missed out on the deadline to still be able to get in on this "one time only" project for a few more weeks while I'm completing the project.

I apologize for being the goofball that replies to this way past the deadline, but I just discovered the forum and the thread.
Would it be at all possible to obtain a copy of this DVD? Are any still available?
I'm familiar with most of the locomotives on the sample list--I felt like a kid in a candy shop just reading it! I want to someday build a full-size narrow gauge locomotive and it all starts with the blueprints!

There should be no reaason why this DVD could not be made available permanently. DVDs can be burned right on your home computer as needed. Also, there are firms that will burn DVDs for a couple of bucks each including labels. Burn as many DVDs as you think you'll sell, put a buy it now listing on ebay and ship them out as the orders come in.

Yes I can burn a DVD/CD on my PC's, that was never an issue, so I think you misunderstood the posts.

There is no "DVD" to copy, right now there is just losts of microfilm negatives/photos of pages and pages of old Baldwin ledger entries. Going from paper to digital and then manually converting all that data into a searchable and chapter form, is going to cost about $500 plus I have to make the DVD copies, and these are going to be issued to the buyer and traceable. I'm not going to have these things on Ebay from now on making some scab money when we need that little bit of money to fund our related steam locomotive projects.

The real problem that is delaying the project right now, is that the DVD is only a small part of the paper process of finding all the info on a specific locomotive, thats why I'm working on getting the rest together also, just to make sure that I have provided anyone that pitches in (mostly my buddies) on this with everything he/they will need.

Its very complicated, nothing simple about any of it.

I'm the only person working on this, and I have very limited time, and a limited amount of money that I'm going to sink into this to probably see it loose money and end up donating all my time. I've bet on the steam fans before and lost. I'll invest in my buddies, but for everyone else its COD.

It'll get done as soon as I can, and it will be done well. The cost will be what it costs, and I'm working for free so its already received my subsidy!

If you want to donate a few thousand $$, then all our projects will get a lot simpler and quicker to complete.

I've already done something similar to what you are proposing to do. We have scanned over 2,000 24" x 36" engineering drawngs of a steel mill in Ohio, made them into PDFs and group them onto five CDs which we sell on ebay. We were fortunate in that one of our volunteers can use a big scanner for free, but if that were not the case the scanning would have cost us $3,000. I don't think we have made 3K on the sales yet, but the CDs will be available "forever" and a small but steady trickle of orders keep trickling in.

Its going to be increasingly difficult to squeeze donations from people who already give all they have and more to their own pet projects, but there are people out there who need certain information for their own projects and will pay to access that info. We must think as entrepeneurs in the future creating products to sell if we want to get an edge on everyone else.

A couple of years ago I attempting to get this project completed and just as I was ready to start buying rolls and paying to have them scanned, I was contacted by someone that is supposed to be "in the know". They suggested that I wait a few years on something. I had my hands full at the time, so I took the advise.

That was then and this is now, and now I'm ready to get this project started and completed, whether the Baldwin materials are completed or not. I'm going with what is the Archives right now and I'll deal with any additions or revisions later.

Some of you must have purchased those microfilm rolls over the years, and if I could borrow your rolls and scan them here on my film scanner, I could quickly return them with no damage or wear. I'll use the soft cotton gloves and the whole film/document preservation routine of precautions to protect your rolls. If I could do that and get the project together that way, I could then have it indexed onto DVD at a very low cost. IF all that can be aranged, I could offer them for sale at a really low cost.

I'll offer everyone that lends us a roll a guarantee that it would be returned in the exact same condition as I received it, or I'd replace it. All the members that lend a roll would get 20% off his purchase of the DVD copy for the first roll that he/she loaned us and 10% for every roll there after. So if member loaned us 9 rolls, his copy would be free. There are about 59 rolls total that would be useful to the Baldwin steam locomotive; rebuilders, modelers & researchers. Here they are;
