The Roanoke Times revisited four of O. Winston Link's famous photos of the Norfolk & Western in western Virginia. From the article:

"Our mission: to see how things had changed -- and how they stayed the same. And, insofar as possible, to re-create the photographs Link shot in the late 1950s and run them with the originals in the The Roanoke Times."

You can find them at www.roanoke.com. You'll need a Macromedia Flash player to see them.

Really interesting stuff, especially the bike path at Green Cove. (I believe Link and ex-wife Conchita were married there)

They did something similar 10-15 years ago in a film called, "Trains That Passed in the Night". In the film, they took Link to several of his famous locations -to see how they had changed. They even went so far as to use the actual people who had appeared in some of his photos.

But the clincher for me, (in the Roanoke Times story) is the house plunked down right in the middle of where the drive-in theater used to be in Iaeger, site of the "Hotshot Eastbound" photo.

What does it for me is the noticable lack of a train in the shot near Luray, Link captured a part of life as it was, i think the obvious hole shows how life has changed....
