The Southeastern Railway Museum began its 30th season on April 8th by opening the first of two exhibit halls.<p>In spite of the blustery January-style weather, over 450 visitors stopped by to see the rolling stock and other exhibits in building one and to go through the recently reburbished Norfolk Southern Exhibit Car.<p>Motive power for the day was Georgia Power #97 (0-6-0).<p><br>Only a portion of the 28,000 square foot building one had been open to the public since the museum re-opened after a 16-month hiatus last October. <p>The exhibit hall features two passenger trains, one showing equipment common in the 1930s, the other showing equipment more common in the late 1940s and early 1950s.<p>On track two: ex-Savannah & Atlanta steam locomotive #750 (by ALCO, 1910), the first-class sleeper/lounge Washington Club (Pullman, 1930), and the Private Car Superb (Pullman, 1911). <p>On track one: ex-Southern Railway diesel locomotive #6901 (EMD, 1951), ex-Norfolk Southern 10-6 sleeper Tugalo River (Pullman, 1949) and ex-ACL office car #307 (Pullman, 1924, renovated 1980s). <p>Each rail car or locomotive is accompanied by an exhibit information station with descriptive text and supporting memorabilia.<p>Other exhibits include a 1906 Ahrens fire engine and a Case tractor, baggage carts, a wooden spring wagon, railway station benches, a velocipede and an exhbit of track tools and equipment.<p>The NS exhibit car can also be viewed on April 15, 16, and 22. Georgia Power #97 will run next on April 15th.<p>Between April and November, SRM is open from 9-5 on Saturdays and from noon-5 on the third Sunday of each month.<p>Hope y'all can stop by and see us.<p>--Malcolm<br> Southeastern Railway Museum collections@srmduluth.org |
