A couple of months ago I met an 88-year old gentleman who, in the course of our conversation, mentioned that he had worked as a "dusty-butt" with the UP. In that I had a puzzled look on my face, he smiled and explained that meant he was a car inspector.<p>Does anyone know of a comprehensive compilation of the different nicknames used to describe the various railroad associated jobs? Did these names vary by railroad or region? As job description/responsibilities changed over the years, did the names change?<br>

Although this gentleman's nickname may not be directly related to his job on the railroad, reading this thread reminded me of a photograph I surfed across a few months ago on Bill Miller's "View From the Galt Station" site. Now, does his nickname suit him or what?!
