With a lull in the messages, I thought I would add a note for speculation. Please do not contribute your "what ifs," but I am curious if any of you have been involved in an interesting restoration acquisition, that due to some problems never happened and the item was scrapped.<p>I personally was going to save two early steel EJ&E boxcars (with a map logo scheme: bypassing Chicago) that were stored off live rails at the Weber industrial park in Skokie, but when I began in earnest I found that they had been scrapped a few days prior.<p>There have been other "near misses" I think, including a Sandy River prairie and a collection of Speedrail equipment.<p>Do you have any good but sad stories? <br>Olin<br> oanderso@uiuc.edu |

Olin: Here is a sad one. A few years ago, a gentleman from the Whitewater Valley contacted me since he heard that I was involved in equipment preservation for our museum. He was trying to find out about a steam powered ex-Rock Island derrick that had been given to their organization but their group had never known about the gift because the former executive director or general manager had simply filed the donation letter away! When the director had left, they had gone through the files and found the letter. Unfortunately his quest was to late as the owner of the property the derrick sat on had eventually got tired of having it around and finally ended up scrapping it.<br> midlandblb@cs.com |

HRS in Savanah refused a gift of a wooden caboose (side door xpress model) which was located almost in the backyard - just over on Hutchinson Island where the new convention center was built. When i discovered the paperwork, i was astounded since the caboose was essentially complete with interior furnishings, etc. All I found when I got back to the location with Rudd Long was splinters and twisted iron. <p>Even worse, 3 small centercab diesel switchers were donated. Previous site management didn't believe they were of any value and sold them all for pennies. Now every time we need to move something around the roundhouse we either doublehead the forklift and yard tractor with chains, or rent the use of a wrecker and winch things around. ONE of those 44 tonners would have been wonderful to retain.....<p>Working on a better set of policies and guidelines now, but there isn't too much left available locally. <p>Dave <br> lathro19@idt.net |

We actually held title to that caboose, Mgmn't refused to use funds to move it, due to deterioration, feeling it was too much work, and would be one of those derelict pieces of equipment that sits around forever. <p>Two derelict locos could have been sold to pay for the move of the third diesel, which "needed batteries" according to the donor. Thankfully, they all went to a rebuilder, rather than the torch. <br>Dave also neglects to mention other losses, and near losses, such as the C of G Inspection Car #2, which we have had title to for 2 years, and couldn't get moved, and is now here. That move, other acquistions, and Dave's restoration of the "San Deigo Trolley" at our shop has shown it can be done here. Thanks Dave!<br> |
