The project is being done by the local historical society, which is not a rail preservation group. This is just to move the engine to downtown. I know that the late Hal Wilmunder worked for four years to aquire the locomotive in hopes of returning the engine to service, and had a tentative deal worked out with the City of Roseville, which allowed him to remove parts in preparation for the move that never did happen. It was proposed that once the engine was running that it would run on the Yolo Shortline. I doubt the engine will ever run again. rstabler@sbcglobal.net |

My main fear is that it might be unnecessarily damaged during the move by unknowing people, either by rolling it without proper axle preparation (1/2 revolution of the wheels is all it takes), or by trying to pick it up by slinging under the boiler, without supporting the frame. Second, by placing it in a landscaped park area, it is likely to get water from lawn sprnklers, causing more corrosion. I'm hoping that persons in the area familiar with proper locomotive restoration will get involved with this project and provide some guidance. My preference would be for it to end up in the Sacramento erecting shop, however that project is a long way from being finished. In the meantime, if it does end up as a display at Roseville, it should be well sheltered, without becoming landlocked by other things in the park that would prevent its later removal. A well-designed shelter for the locomotive should be usable as a covered picnic area when and if the engine is later removed. Agreed. The sad part of this story is that this particular locomotive was sought for operation with it's sister engine on the Tarantula in Texas. As sson as word got out that someone else might want it and actually restore and rtun it, all those who never cared about it before suddenly got very passive and protective and finally killed the entire idea. This came complete with the usual "rediscovery" plans and promises to take much better care of the locomotive. Those promises almost always last only long enough to drive the interested parties away, then the community once more forgets about their prized engine and lets rot and ruin resume it's course. |

From what I understand, the boiler on this engine is in excellent condition. It simmered near the Donner pass for years as an engine for fire trains, traveling down the hill for scheduled maintenance. The Yolo folks were interested, but probably not enough to fight all the local political battles to get it. Another rail group would like to see it preserved back up in Truckee or somewhere up along its old tromping grounds. Though the roof that covers the locomotive at the fairgrounds is in decay, it has helped extend the engine's life further. I predict a move to an open display in a park will follow with another 10 or 20 years of decay and neglect, at which time it probably will be not good for much operation at all, and may fall out of favor with the residents who by then don't have any significant memories of steam engines. Then again, maybe the display track will be connected to live track and the steamer will be accidentally switched to the CSRM yard by a remotely operated UP switch engine. ;] |
